Those XD's are pretty nice actually. I use them on my ss crosser. Light, inexpensive and they took some stout pounding through rock gardens last summer.

I keep drooling over the Ritchey WCS compact cranks for an upgrade but I can't justify it.

do all lower end/non-road bianchis come with that obnoxious leopard-skin strip down the middle of the seat now? i was in LA yesterday and the major hipster shop had all of their new bianchis (including the san jose)with the seat and then another shop i stopped at had the same thing on one of the hybrid/comfort bikes. it was obnoxious.

I_luv_hooters
03-23-08, 10:57 AM
yes. if you buy one you have to ride it with the leopardskin seat. thats the rules, sorry.

frankstoneline
03-23-08, 02:43 PM
I think the leopard print seat is the least of my concerns, I'm wondering when they will figure out that unicrown fork is horrible and invest in something thats lugged. But otherwise, and i have that beef with all of bianchi's bikes that have that fork, it looks like a way fun bike.

supercub
03-23-08, 02:59 PM
Don't most bikes nowadays have a unicrown fork? Is it really that big of a deal? It's just a design element of the fork. I don't get why people become so bent out of shape about unicrown forks. People actually seem to choose bikes based on this one consideration.

That Masi is pretty slick. I like that they included a derailleur hanger on it and I even like the color. The dropouts will probably doom it commercially, though. Track ends seem to sell.

I don't think there is anything technically wrong with a unicrown fork. They are on just about everything, and I've never heard of one breaking or failing to do it's job of attaching the handlebars to the front wheel properly. All these people pissing and moaning about unicrowns are really just whining about fashion. They might as well complain that my messenger bag doesn't match my SPD shoes. Wah wah, it's got a unicrown fork. Guess what it's a bike not a tuxedo. A lugged fork won't get you to the coffee shop any faster than a unicrown so STFU and ride your own bike rather than picking everyone everyone else's apart just because it doesn't meet your fashion criteria. There. I said it.

Nice San Jose Plow. I like the color. It's purty! :D

yeah. i mean, if you didn't know any better you'd think it was a conversion. i guess it sort of is. well, it's sold single-speed with the option of putting whatever you want on it. i've been thinking about that bike everyday since i've seen, so i'll probably get it with my tax return. i'll post pics yadda yadda.

The OP is still waiting for his 75s, deep Vs, Nitto track bars, and honey Ti Brooks to arrive so that he can finally ride his bike. Stock parts look like they work, but actually they are totally functionless. Really a bike only becomes a bike when you spend $500 on upgrades.

1) Weird shaped bars
2) Annoying integrated rear light.

Other than that, the MSRP on that is pretty damn good. Decent components ish.

randonneur bars are kind of an odd choice as stock.

well its a commuter. everything about the look of the bars makes great sense. nice flat flats, zero-curve hoods and shallow drops with plenty of flare. looks very comfy.

some curve actually. here's another shot.

yeah, i'm pretty into it. a rack and fenders would make that bike a fine commuter. actually, probably not fenders. it doesn't rain enough here.

edit: oh yeah it's got downtube shifter bosses. most people would disagree but i think that's ****ing classy.

Well OK then... what's your problem with that one?

oh actually now I see it. Vertical drops... well that's a bummer, they had such a good thing going there too. If they can put a derailer hanger on a SS commuter, why can't they put horizontal dropouts on a CX bike? *******S! I HAte them and their pretty retro paint!

as far as i can tell the only bike on the market that fits my needs/wants is the cross/traveler's check which has canti mounts, horizontal drop outs and a host of nice options. the pompino comes pretty close but doesn't have a der. hanger. can you think of any others?

and yes, the masi paint job is great.

It's just as nice as the Crosscheck in my opinion. That's not really saying that much. Surly frames are nice, but nothing special. On the ugly logos they're about even. Also I'm a sucker for Gang Green.

I s'pose if you don't like the components, then the Crosscheck is a better option since you can get it as a frameset. Personally, it sounds like for what you're looking for a nice 80s vintage 531 tubed touring frame would probably serve you better than anything new you can find within spitting distance of the Crosscheck.

But hey for the sake of playing the game I'll try again. Bob Jackson World Tour?

i work at a shop, so my crosscheck frame will cost me about half of what that bob jackson would. the colors are nice and the bike is no nonsense. its a win win win situation. the only other thing i can think of would be a salsa frame... but those paintjobs are miserable.
