I'm going to be driving up week after next (Apr 1 or 2) to meet my friend Jackie for an after work ride/workout. Was thinking of doing some hill repeats on Newport Coast. Not knowing the traffic in the area, is this a crazy idea or no? Or is there a better road in the area for hill repeats that time of day?

Also, she works in the Fashion Island area. I'm not sure with whether to ride from there or drive over and park someplace closer.

Newport Coast is a great location, from a ref. sent to me 3.7 miles, 1076' to the top of Vista Ridge. Of course there is traffic but the bike lane is wide. Its a much used road by cyclists. Once you top NCD, short descent, to Vista Ridge (R), follow it to the top, now a 1/2 mile or so flat into one more bump, follow it to the end and descend Park Ridge (L) back to NCD (L) back to PCH. At the bottom I usually get in the left of two left turn lanes make a U-turn a up you go. You can also pass Vista Ridge and ascend Park Ridge, shorter but more demanding. There is school at the bottom of Park Ridge might be good place to park. Cycling is dicey through Corona Del Mar on the way to NCD, but an experienced rider should have no problem.

Just thought you can bypass CDM, Look MacArther Blvd (L) off PCH, San Miguel (R), San Jaquin (R) to NCD (R).

Another area nearby is Turtle Rock Dr, approx 3mile roller loop, with good parking and good climb and descent. Google map Turtle Rock Community Park for parking, follow loop look for Starcrest/Ridgeline for climbing repeats off TRD.

Have fun

Fashion Island is really close to Newport Coast. PCH would be a good warmup, or you could take San Joaquin Hills for a nice gradual climb to NC.
