This coming weekend (short notice, I know), the San Diego Randonneurs is hosting a fleche:
http://sandiegorandonneurs.com/fleche2008.html
To cut to the chase, it is a 24 hour ride where a team rides together over their chosen route. Each team is supposed to have five bikes. We are short by a couple. If you have any interest let me know.
Our route is the minimal 360km, which is easily done in 24 hours. The challenge of our route is the mountains to the east of San Diego. Our high point, both literally and figuratively, is Laguna Mountain, at 6000 feet.
The route for our team:
Part 1: http://tinyurl.com/2gjd2r
Part 2: http://tinyurl.com/2dg9x7
Part 3: http://tinyurl.com/2y987k
It is in parts because we go off roads (ferry to Coronado, and a bike path). A quick description of the route:
- south out of Carlsbad, straight down the coast
- ferry out of downtown to Coronado
- down the Strand
- east along Otay Lakes to Campo Road
- Honey Springs, Japatal, Pine Valley, Mt Laguna, Julian, Santa Ysabel, Warner Springs, Rainbow Canyon, Fallbrook, bike path to Oceanside and then to the finishing point.
There, say it real fast and it doesn't sound so bad. No cost to sign up. We ride as a team at a moderate pace, stopping when we have to in order to not get ahead of our time schedule. Hopefully at some point we can get in a short nap. How bad can a ride be if you sleep in the middle? Self sufficiency is a must. Few services will be open where we are going later in the evening and night.
PM or email if interested. Like I said, short notice. Our team is in flux.
