I'm having a touring bike built for me but the frame only comes in British Racing (dark) Green. I'm considering having a car body shop paint it before it is built. Not that it really matters, but what colours should I consider?

In my quest for touring bikes for my wife and my upcoming 5 year tour we have heard two things time and time again about paint...

1. Something that doesn't scream, "Look at this bike, isn't it expensive looking?"

and...

2. Black... it's the only color that actually can be made to look new again with touch up paint.

I'm in the same situation. I'm leaning toward the Oxford Green of BMW cars. Not as dark as British Racing Green.

There is a shade of BRG which is very dark and looks classy, esp with gold lug lining. The paler versions , like Serotta BRG looks a bit washed out.
My own bike is a dark metallic Burgundy red and I like it a lot.

Anne Mustoe had one of her bikes painted bright orange which she believed helped counter theft...

Back in the 70's Ford made some Pintos bright orange. Those cars sat on the lot for two and even three years. Even priced lower than the same model used, they didn't sell. Sure, you can use orange, but.....

Back in the 1970's I had a custom built touring bike that included a triple, cantilever brakes front and rear, a read disk brake, and front and rear chrom moly intergrated racks. It was loaded with other unusual features allowing it to take French, Italian, or British threaded freewheels plus it used 650B wheels.. Not the run of the mill touring bike back then.

It's color (colour)? Ugly Orange! ( a cross between bright orange and fire engine red) No way did I want to lose it. Who would try to take a bike like that! I still have it and have yet to find a more enjoyable touring bike. I've done about 50,000 miles on it. Over the years I went from that ugly orange to flat black and now a navy blue.

Doing all over again today I think I would start with black.....
