I see that a lot of us hail from the provincial capital and thought it might be nice to have a little place to check in, share ride and trail reports, and just like a similarly named thread we have had going over at MTBR... it might be a way for people to hook up with some new riding partners.
I just came back from my Easter ride (I had to work off dinner) and took a spin down Groat road (which still has some icy patches), rode along the river, climbed up to the Legislature where I snapped a few pics, and then burned it up on the way home.
I even saw my first Robin of spring and saw a flock of geese heading north which is always a good sign.
So who else was out enjoying the glorious spring weather we were having ?

Nice to see some pics from the Etown riders, I've been living in Vancouver for three years now which has great cycling infrastructure but I miss the hard division of seasons and prairie skies of Edmonton. The river valley is amazing, especially in the fall, Stanley Park doesn't compare and the north shore is too intense for me. I was a winter commuter when I lived there which was quite pleasant even in the spring when the 8 inch hardpack on the side streets would start to break up. Have a good spring on those dusty sandy streets!
I am running cross tyres on the Trek... they are really good at handling the sketchy roads.
i've been riding my skinny tires, and it's fine on the main roads, but really really sketchy on the sideroads (kind of fun, i guess). Also, the biketrail i use to get to work is under construction right now... it sucks a lot.
Groat road is really fun if your going south, but it's always kind of death riding north.
E-Town commuter checking in. I ride between Edmonton and Nisku so if you see someone on a bike there it's probably me.
I'm running the skinny tires as 50th street and hwy 625 are in great condition.
The main roads are in great shape right now and the side roads just keep getting better and better.
The south side of the river (the low trails) will be snow covered for quite a while longer as it just has too much shade and not enough sun.
Edmonton to Nisku sounds like a great commute... how far is that ?
It's just over 20km and yeah i like it.
I'd be out riding if I could shake the plague I have currently....
I got a shiny new Giant Bowery (excuse is that I'll use it for commuting) that is sitting in the garage cause I have no energy to do anything with it.

You will have to post a ride review on the Bowery when you finally get the chance to dirty it up.
I'm up to doing 20 km a day and just found that I'll be able to get in a few extra km on the hamster wheel / trainer as I have a month of rehab to do and when they offered me choice of the treadmill or the bike the choice was obvious.
It's almost that time of year when we start to kick off our midnight rides and who knows, we might even pull something together after the next Critical Mass ride (last Friday of the month).
If you haven't participated in a CM here I should let you know we're low on the anarchy and high on fun and having a good time... we usually ride from Churchill Square to Gazebo Park that is just off Whyte Avenue. It's a great way to meet other riders of all kinds.

CM from Churchill square to Gazebo Park? No thanks, that ride must be for bums or pot smoking hippies. :) At night both of those places can get pretty slummy.
I'm around, ride a lot on the range roads east of the city and look for a red blur. ;)
BTW the range roads are in excellent shape as they are plowed but not sanded.

I rode down 91st street this morning (not my usual route). Wow, lots of cyclists... i had no idea.
91st is my usual route. I've noticed a lot more riders out this year too. Wonder why???
Had a mind blowing ride to work today as I opted to take a dip in the river valley and came down by Victoria Park, crossed the LRT pedway, and hit as much single track as possible for good measure.
I really like staying off the roads in this kind of weather and prefer using the trail system as much as possible since it's quiet and cool next to the river... I built myself a new commuter yesterday and am mightily pleased.

Hey 65er... I really like the Bowery. It is fast & fun. Not sure if it is the tires or the bike, but the sections I found very jarring on my road bike are much smoother on the Bowery. I like the singlespeed, but still find myself trying to shift when my cadence gets too high... Some days I think the gearing is perfect, with a tailwind it is too easy & with a headwind it just makes me think I'm week. (I have the stock 48-18).
I think I probably should have bought the small (got the medium). With a shorter stem it is okay, but I would get the small if I had a do-over. Maybe I'll just use it as an excuse to get a new bike in a year or two.
I was listening to the Sonic podcast on my way to work this am. Small town Pete is a bicyclist... Pete are you out there?
Bike month is in full swing... I just got back from the pancake breakfast at city hall where we served up a mountain of flapjacks, tuned up a great number of bikes, and gave away a good deal of schwag.
We'll be doing another breakfast nest Friday at Ezio Farone Park (sans pancakes) and mixing up smoothies on Thursdays during the afternoon rush hour.

The repair marathon will be held from this Saturday at noon to Sunday at noon and i plan to Ironman it and stay through the whole thing like I did last year.
