I have this hunch that there are several of you lurkers out there who read this forum but either have not joined or do not participate. Time to step out of the shadows. We'd like to hear from you! ;)

I've been lurking here for about a year. I've posted a few times, but haven't really participated that much, as I'm still working on procuring a bike (yes, a year later) :o. Every time I think I've got it narrowed down and am ready to pull the trigger, something happens to drag me back from the ledge. Hopefully, I'll be the proud owner of something soon, as my son is itching for both of us to hit the trails since we got his new bike a couple of months ago. :)

BF is one of the few forums I've used where I find myself reading posts way more than replying to posts. Sometimes I post a good deal, then at times I'll go months with out replying to anything. There's a lot of stuff to read on here and it can take a A LOT of your time to sift through all of it.

Ive been lurking about 4 months on and off. Im excited! Im going to look at bikes tomorrow! Its a big deal for me since I live out in the middle of nowhere. Lots of places to ride, but no LBS for 250 miles. So Im going to the 'big city' tomorrow and tue and gonna check out some bikes while Im out there.

BTW, slightly ot-Is 'haggeling' to get a better price ok? One shop Im gonna look at has a '06 hardrock comp disk for $500 on their web site. List on the bike was only $550 for a new one. Would I be out of line to either ask $425-450 or maybe pay asking price but have them throw in some other stuff (upgraded seat, clothing, or something else, not excedding $75-100)?

The margin on a hardrock is not that much. I would ask for a reasonable cut on some accessories and free installation.

Long-time member, but usually quiet. Busy learning and enjoying the discussions in this forum and the Commuting and Fifty+ forums until I can shoe-horn some more riding time into my life. Sounds lame even to me, but 4 kids and one income have kept me pretty busy for a while now. :D

okay, you caught me. Been reading over a year, posted once in a while. This year, got serious, have dropped about 20lbs or so since new years, but it has been in the gym so far, waiting for the weather to break here in rochester, ny. to top it off, I just got pneumonia, so it'll be another week or two until something happens bikewise. I did get a Park pcs-10 to help with repairs though. Can I go back to lurking now?

I'm guily!

I joined the forum about a month ago after I had an issue when replacing a 12-25 cassette with a 11-34 so that I could get up some hills. I still haven't figured out what the 11 is for, if I can peddle that fast I'm coasting down a hill. Last year I started cycling again after a 25 year break, funny I stopped cycling about the time I got a drivers license. In my break I gained enough experiance to join this exclusive club.

I'm currently training(?) for Reach the Beach, an ~80 mile ride from Salem, OR to Pacific city, over a mountain range. I understand that there is about 6200 feet of climbing with 6400 feet of descents. I like the sound of the downs but the ups concern me. My longest ride so far is about 25 miles. Now I just have to do three of those in one day and I'm good.

I've appreciated the experience I've gained from reading this forum.

Thanks

Alan

That sounds like an awesome ride! Let us know how your training is going. It shouldn't be too long to the point where you can handle that distance, but the vertical sounds intimidating.

I have been lurking for about a month. I finally got sick of being way overwight (6' 1" and 329 pounds) and decided it was time to do somehting about it. My family is very competitive, so I challenged everybody else in my extended family to go along with me and see how much weight we could lose this year. I knew that changing my eating habits alone was not going to do it, so I had to find some sort of excercise that would do the trick. I turned to my old youth size department store mountain bike that was sitting in the garage collecting dust. It turns out that it does an amazing job of burning calories. I have lost 32 pounds since January 1, and the six other people in my family that have joined me have lost a good bit as well. We are currently at a total weight loss of 141 pounds. I am up to weekend rides of 20 miles (I started at 4 miles) and am currently shopping for a road bike.

Unfortunately, I have not gotten anyone else on a bike. It has been interesting though, to watch all of us go about this weight loss in our own way. All of us are getting the job done, but with different methods and different types of exercise. We are basically doing it like a Biggest Loser competition. Everyone emails there weight in every Monday morning, and I send out the results for the week. We all chipped in $25 for prize money at the end of the year. So far it is working out well and has been a great motivating factor, because none of us like to lose.

I started coming here a few years ago, when I got back to riding. Every time I googled something bike related, BF would come up. Once I figured that it was THE place to be, I bookmarked it and would try and answer my questions here. Finally a few weeks ago I got fed up not being able to see the attached pictures of everyone's set ups so I gave in and registered. Figured now I should post something once in a while...

Thanks East Hill! Looks like I'm likely going to be an Athena for life thanks to my big frame, so you'll likely see me around here :). Most of my riding these days is hauling things (kids, groceries, text books), and my non riding time trying to get my family to ride and dreaming about touring. So I'm also frequently at the utility, recreation and family, and touring forums. Waiting for it to warm up around here so I can get the kids out more. Seeing as how you all like your pics so much, here is one with my new bike and new trailer last week. Enjoy!

I have been lurking for about a month and I must say that you guys have been a lot of help. Before I found this forum I knew nothing about bicycles. Thanks to reading the threads that is changing!

I wanted to get into cycling to help with my weight loss program. On 1/1/08 I was 261 lbs and today I weighed in at 230 but seem to be stuck here. I am pretty sure I am going to buy a Trek 7.2 FX.

Thank you for your help and for being such an inspiration! If you can do it, I can too.

Hi Joe, this is really a great forum. I have a lot of places I like to visit here on this board, but this is one of my top two destinations. There's not a person here who doesn't have a great story, even if it's 'just' a story about expanding horizons from riding a couple of hundred feet on the first ride, to being able to ride a century a year later.

I have to admit to lurking for the past few weeks. At 240 (ish), I am a longtime clyde - however as I get more serious about my riding I can see the chance to get down to around 200. I took up mountain biking about 20 years ago and was fairly serious during college. I even rode in the Leadville 100 twice (didnt finish either time, but made 60 miles - not really a good ride a clyde) After children, career, life, etc took me away from biking for a few years I have been working my way back in over the past few. Mostly road riding now and have even started dong some 'cross races (questionable - perhaps the local series can add a clyde class!) I stumbled into BF while searching for techie info on cassette - rd compatibility and have really enjoyed my reading so far. Thanks for being so welcoming, sharing info, and keeping the humor up.

I've got a buddy that does 2 or 3 100 mile mtb races a summer. He also does 24 hour rides and trail running marathons in the Rockies.

The thing is that he doesn't train. He just thinks its fun to go out and ride for 24 hours.
