Foo - Computer help please

I'm running windows 98 1st ed., and while I'm on the net, I crash about once a day. The error message says something is wrong in the FLASH player. I've unistalled and installed Adobe a couple of times, that doesn't work, I've tried all the 98 downloads on the Microsoft website, but there are apparently no new fixes since Bill Gates hasn't supported 98 for a while now.

Any ideas on how to get it to work? Is there another flash type player I can use that is not adobe?

I suspect you have a more modern version of flash, which expects a newer operating system. Biting the bullet and upgrading to XP, or running Linux would seem the two least expensive options. Either of those options would be a huge P.I.T.A. though.

Not to be an *****, but for $400 you could buy a whole new PC at the local big box store.
That would solve all of your troubles with compatibility, performance, and stability.
Sometimes it's easier and better just to toss the old and get something current.

If you hunt around www.adobe.com you should be able to find some older version flash players. They have them there for developers to test with. Go back a version or two.

And it's true, $500 gets you a kickin' computer these days.

How old is the computer? I can send you a CD with windows 2000 corporate. No CD key needed, and it should fix your problems. The downside is that you'll have to format.

Or maybe the RAM is going bad, but nothing else you do is stress testing the computer enough. Too many possibilities, and at some point, it's easier to retire a computer than to keep chasing after the problem. If the crash can't be reproduced the same way over and over, I suspect it's something in hardware.

Heh, heh.. I've got a 12-year old Dell Latitute CPi (366mhz P-II) running Windows98. Still does everything I bought it for, web-browsing, email, word-processing, basic videos, etc. As long as my needs for it doesn't change, there's no need for another computer.

As for Flash Player, avoid the automatic ActiveX downloads, they suck and also opens you up to a tonne of viruses as ActiveX gives those scripts system-permissions on your system (I turn off all ActiveX and remove Windows Scripting Host). Do a manual download of the Flash Player and install yourself from here:

It's the amount of "hurtz" you receive when you try to operate a computer. Lower "hurtz"= less pain.

Seriously, get a light linux OS and replace Win 98. I did this several years ago when win 98 became intolerable.
