it's that time of year again....when vehicles outnumber pedestrians and cyclists 10:1 around Hains Point and East and West Potomac Parks.

I was riding around there yesterday to get a pre-crowd look at the blossoms. There was a fair sized crowd, but nowhere near what there will be next week. There were a few trees along the river in full bloom, but the ones around the Tidal Basin a still a few days away from opening.

The trees in Kenwood are still a week or so away, but some other groves (like the one at Delacarlia) were open.

Good advice. Enjoy it now while you can. The Park Service is rerouting parking and plans to send traffic into Hains point for parking where The Awakening used to be. What a mess.

Yep. I heard on the radio about the parking and shuttle bus plan.
During the cherry blossom season I have more problems with the pedestrians than the cars. From the hump bridge south people wander in the road at random. And don't even try to get across the Memorial Bridge.
IMO Kenwood is usually a better experience. Less crowded, almost entirely locals (instead of tourists) and it's right off the CCT.

Anyone going to the Sakura Matsuri Street Festival? If the family doesn't join me I'll be riding there.
(need my takoyaki fix :D)

I was down at the Mall for the kite festival yesterday (Saturday) and thought I'd ride over to see the blossoms again. The crowd was nuts. Traffic on Independence Ave was gridlocked. Managed to get over to the north rim of the Tidal Basin, but with the crowd just shuffling along, I took a few pictures and left. Didn't even bother going down towards Hains Point. Rode back to Virginia and hunted up some of the lesser know cherry groves in Alexandria and Arlington.

Next week - Kenwood. (added - PPTC is doing the "Beach to Creek" Ride and the CCT by Kenwood would be a nice way to return to VA.)

Wish I was down there right now. :(

I haven't been down there in a while... it's finally gone? Crap. :(

It was moved to the new hotel & conference center just south of Wilson Bridge on the Maryland side of the river. The Park Service's lease was up and the owners of the conference center swooped in and made an offer to the artist. The new location is on a small beach that should put The Awakening partly in the water at high tide.

I made a point of getting down to Hains Point before the move. These picks are the day before Thanksgiving last fall.

I wonder how many bikes have posed in that hand. ;)

But what about the foot?

Not for even a second did I think I was doing anything original, but sometimes that's OK. They do make good pictures to show people who don't live in the area and have no idea what The Awakening is.

Heh -- nice, it looks like it's giving a thumbs up.

And yeah, it's a good way to give a sense of scale, too. When I went down there to take some pics, I made sure that I had a few with random people & kids standing around & climbing on it.

I went down there today, and took my camera -- but forgot the stupid battery for it.

There was nothing worth photographing anyway, though. The sod is installed, but not yet blended in. There were a couple stripes of field paint left, and a couple soccer goals sitting nearby. Whoever thinks that that lumpy field is safe for soccer must be an optimistic soul.
