Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Kryptonite Evolution Mini...How much space is there?

I'd like to get the Evolution Mini (the smaller of the two available) to lock up my rear wheel to the frame and a parking meter/bike rack/whatever. Will I be able to squeeze the ends of a Kryptoflex cable into that, as well (I'd like to weave it between both wheels and the frame, too, as I have two quick-release wheels).

I know I should be getting some locking skewers as well, but I still would like to know if I could fit it all inside the Mini. I know it would obviously be easier to get the larger sized of the Minis, but I like the idea of a would-be-thief being deterred (albeit slightly) by the lack of space for prying.

a parking meter might be a squeeze, but a bike rack you should be fine.

Rear wheel + frame + post requires a decent-sized lock... I'm not even sure a mini can do that, even on a track bike. If it can, the cable has to fit on the section between the post and the bike. Only your lockups will take forever.

I run a bulldog mini and a cable, with the lock going through rear wheel and main triangle, and just the cable on the front wheel. I fit on nearly everything. I don't know how much smaller the krypto is.

I'm not positive the dimensions on the evolution mini, but I have an on-gaurd bulldog mini and have no problem getting front wheel, down tube and rack in there and I could definitely get the ends of a cable in there too. Where is OP locking up that security is such an issue? I dont think I could justify using cable locks for wheels unless they were REALLY nice wheels or I was locking up in a shady place for a lock time.

If you cut all the rubber **** off the mini its gives you more room

You could always get the Mini U Series 2... same width as the evolution mini, and roughly 1.5" longer...should cover the parking meter lockup. It's also cheaper.

I used to use a Kryptonite cable for one wheel and a u-lock for the frame plus the other wheel. I found that cables are a ***** and now use a NY lock for fw/frame/parking meter or bike rack and the old krypto u-lock for frame to rear wheel. I hope to replace the old u-lock with an evo mini. My point is that, weight aside, I'd rather use 2 u-locks than one plus a cable. Cables are such a pain to work with every time you lock up, and now I feel super secure.

It really depends on the bike, too. On my 3rensho conversion and mikkelsen racy bike, I can fit an on-guard mini around the seat tube, rear wheel, and a parking meter. On my track bike, I have to leave the seat tube alone, and on the mountain bikes it's a struggle just getting the rear wheel and a meter in there.

+1 to that. if you just lock the rear wheel to the meter through the rear triangle, it'll be fine. it's wide enough, and you should be able to get the bike close enough to the meter.

that being said, i have a bulldog mini. don't know how the two compare. too lazy to look right now.

why have I never seen this before!

With the evolution mini i can lock my front wheel + down tube + bike rack tube. And thats only if it is positioned perfectly. I can't do the same with the back wheel. No way on a fat post like a parking meter.

i can get an evo mini around my rear wheel and seat tube on a bike rack and smaller poles. but it will depend on the distance of your rear wheel to your seat tube, rim width etc. on a meter i just do the rear wheel sheldon brown style. just buy an extra bulldog mini for 20 and use it for your front wheel. old chain and tube for your saddle...

In the linked picture, Sheldon has the Mini sitting on the chain. I make sure that one end is through the chain as well. Someone would have to cut the wheel and the chain to get my frame. Not an inpossible feat, but more time consuming to jack. Let's face it, locks just keep "honest" people honest. The trick is to make taking the bike as complicated as possible.

If I'm feeling lazy and trusting on a rural ride, I'll skip the krypto and just padlock my chain to a rear spoke, but I don't recommend this in any sort of high-risk area.

Not sure if this would help much, but I use a similar method (albeit with a U lock bigger than the mini), except I thread one end of the cable through the other. That way you get more length (I go through the saddle, then both wheels with the cable), and also you will only have one end to lock to the U lock.

Not sure if you were already planning on doing that, but I noticed you wrote 'ends' plural...

Kryptonite has a web site with the dimensions. Then you can measure the other things in question.

yeah, i did that, and i can lock a wheel and frame both about 85% of the time.

Wrap some electrical tape around it when your cut all the rubber stuff off. Won't be crazy padded but it'll help.
