Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Portland Fixed Gear Club

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey,
Are there any groups/clubs in Portland for fixed gear riders? I'm thinking about setting up a message board and organizing some longer weekend rides. Would this be something any of you would be interested in?

Sounds like fun, I'll be out in Portland this fall and a for awhile this spring...
Oh I do photography and web design too, if you need a hand...
Blog-ish thing: http://oneshot.me.uk
I thought about starting a Vbulletin message board for fixed gear riders too. Vbulletin licensing is expensive though and I'd rather buy carbon rims, which I did.
Cool.... I'll have something set up in the next few days....
Post back and let us know, Orlick.

ha ha, cool. i was wondering about that. bf is cool, but regional forums are cool too since they can really help bring people together to ride, race, do cool things, get to know one another and meet up around town; just generally build a nice bike scene in the area. this is cool.
that seems like more of a "crew" thing

it could be, but it doesn't have to be. i've posted and watched on sffixed for a bit, and a lot of cool meetups, rides, and even recovery of stolen bikes has been facilitated by the way this can be used as a tool for building community. it doesn't have to be exclusive or elite, though.

It definitely should though.
So which one of you guys was doing 1 legged skids in the parking lot at 11th and Hawthorne Saturday afternoon?
Can I join your crew and get matching tattoos? I would've stopped by and talk to you, but I was so close to the bar I couldn't risk having to wait any longer to start drinking that morning.

oh. i saw something about that, what's up with that?
edit: something that's great on the regional boards is threads tend to stay on topic and chatter free compared to bfssfg because off topic stuff seems to get taken to pm's (or "whispers" on sffixed) fairly quickly. so, alex, pm me on this.

Hopefully it will be useful to organize some rides.

i liked the 180-ish bunny hop. the planting of feet looked weak even as much as it reminded me of 80s skate tricks. meh, this video's okay, they'll get better. the whole "track bike trick" scene will. i was watching a movie from the 80s about skateboarding yesterday and was thinking about how weak the tricks looked compared to modern stuff. then i realized that if people think track bike tricks look weak, a lot of that is because it's an underdeveloped pursuit so far.
razor scooter tricks

Hell yes. I lament its demise. The owner died and passed control to his/her grandaughter, who didn't like running the bar. It only lasted a few months before she (reportedly) abruptly shut the place down and leased the parking lot to PCC.
A few of the bartenders are working at Interstate Bar & Grill, and took the karaoke scene over there too. Similarly eclectic / scary clientele, but just not the same.
The Florida Room ain't bad, though. As a drunk octogenarian Paragon regular put it, "it's one of them yuppie places!" But not really.

i might try the interstate--where's that? i can't recall. the clentele being similar is cool...but the atmosphere can't be recaptured by any other bar unless the owners just let it go for a few years, a decade or two maybe...it was the king of dives.
but i also liked it cuz it was sort of a punk bar, too, a good place to meet up with some punk kids. now i'm not sure where to go. i remember going to porky's a few times when i first moved there and knew more people in the punk scene. both of them used to have some good shows, too. the only thing i've heard of recently is a place called traumaward that has shows sometimes.
I moved out from downtown into Beavertron to be closer to work. Everyday my sense of self dies a little.

there's a lot but i also suggest doing this on pdxfixed as well, you might get responses from some non-bfers and get more info that way.
i'll write something up in a little, i've told so many people so many things about the town i can't even start another list right now.

We should start promoting the hell out of PDXfixed as to get an actual community thing started up....

+1. i lived in gresham for a month. not too great, and way less great than portland proper.
The best way to promote it is to probably email all your friends who ride fixed about it. Also, if there are any other boards you're a part of you could make a quick post about it.

Sabalas, East End, MFP/Slow bar, and occasionally playing a show at Satyricon. Either that or Brian's spot by the Gyroshop on Burnside. That's where you'll find 85-90% of the remaining contingent of Portland's punk rock scene.
If you're just looking for gutter friends that look down on people who live in houses or think that they're bucking the system because they ask for spare change every day instead of working and happened upon a conflict ass flap patch, well those're everywhere.
;)
There's also a constant supply of 15 and 16 year olds wearing really clean new looking misfits and motorheads t-shirts standing outside the Hawthorne theater begging for cigarettes usually.
Hahaha.

I'm buying a silk screen kit and a printer here, but it'll be a month or two so until then if you come across something jump on it.
Also, you could go to Discouraged records off Belmont, ask them who they've got doing their shirts right now, usually whoever they line up is pretty good and could use the money they tend to go with independent screeners.
Im glad someone made a site for the SSFG community here in Portland.
Posted a few times on the site.
Im down for helping with some design services. I would not mind help with some screen printing down the road either (stickers, t-shirt, posters etc).

Eh, everybody thinks that whatever lifestyle they're trying to live or whatever fashion group they're currently trying to resemble is the best, and they sub consciously flip everyone else crap for it.
I'm just particularly dour towards street punks because I used to feel a kinship with the whole scene, and nowadays am more than anything just annoyed by it. I used to hang out with migratory train hoppers and militant krust vegans, but just couldn't keep up. Eventually you feel like you're hanging out with a bunch of Christians they can be so judgemental.
Portland's a good town to live in anyway. I love it here. There's a million good bars to go to.
I tend to stick to karaoke places on the East side personally.
