Actually, I kinda like remakes, but it depends.

Sadly, many remakes are only made to capitalise on the reputation of the original, and little or nothing is gained, and often, a lot is lost.

But for some genres, particularly tech-heavy sci-fi, I can see mostly good things coming from a cheesy original being remade with a modern arsenal of special effects and set design, as well as removing much of the period-specific fashion and hair styles. Case in point: Star Trek TOS. TNG was, in many ways, a remake of TOS, at least according to Roddenberry himself. And it improved on all counts, IMO.

Then again, there are genres that probably won't fare well in a modern production environment. Perhaps the most obvious would be the great epics of the 50s and early 60s. I think movies such as Lawrence of Arabia and Ben Hur would be very tough sells in the movie industry today. A modern version of either would be maybe 90-100 minutes long, laden with unnecessary special effects and possibly even filmed extensively in huge studio sets, with computer-generated scenery added later, instead of in some desert area in the Middle East or northern Africa, like the originals.

And stop making sequels. And "prequels." And movies based on old TV shows that were mediocre (or worse) to begin with. And movies based on comic books.

almost every single one of those movies tanks. The ones based on old tv shows almost uniformly stink...i can barely think of one that was even watcheable. Same with ones based on old cartoons: the jetsons, scooby doo, flintstones, josie and the *****cats. They were all HORRIBLE!!!!

And enough with Dr Seuss. For some reason, that loveable author's books have all become unbearable disasters of movies.

No! Remake movies! It helps people of the younger generation "discover" the classics!

considering that the majority of people who go to movies is what, something like 18-30, and considering that said age group has shown no originality when it comes to style choices, why are you surprised?

I dislike old movies. I prefer the newly made ones. Meh, its likely my "next gen" mind, but when they are remade I being to appreciate the older stuff...

not to the point of watching them. I can't think "oh my god, look at those high end graphics from the 40's..."...

so...movies that are remade, are both a compliment to the originals and a showcase of the new. My favoriate story would be one with both a good plot, good storey and good graphics. Watching something from the 60's makes me thing "hmmmm...thank god its not the 60's..."...just think what someone in their teens is thinking...

I can "relate"...but I still don't like watching them. Thank god someone is remaking some "awesome" movies for the kids today.

Actually no. Depending on how far back in the sci fi/fantasy genre you decide to read, nothing is original. (ok very little) The originators were quite extraordinary in their depictions, we take them for granted now of course.

Mostly yes. I did think LOtR was a great remake.
