Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What is the absolute biggest you'd use? This is for digital images, music, and videos.
Right now, it seems you get the most bang for your buck at 500 GB. So more than likely, 2x500 GB would be cheaper than 1 TB, or 4x250 GB.

Yeah, but do I really want 500g if important data on one drive?
I suppose I can back it up on DVD's...

We've successfully tested 1TB for Security Video applications; still we recommend a RAID6 config when over 500GB

Has anyone been shopping these recently? I could use another and so could my roommate. I've got the old Seagate 120G from a few years ago and it's worked fine. What's the best bang/buck these days?
I'm debating on buying a 2TB external, but at that capacity, I would run the drive in raid 1 mode for mirrored 1TB just to minimize the loss of one of the drives pops.

have been looking, but not really digging deep.
the Iomega Desktop Hard Drive 500 GB (http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Desktop-Drive-Hi-Speed-External/dp/B000HI9O5W/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206413333&sr=8-3) at $120 (plus shipping) is tempting.

that is a lot of volume for $120!
This gets me wondering. Why can't HDD makers come up with some sort of standardized cartridge format for their drives, so I can completely get rid of tapes altogether, and use libraries of hard disks.
I know Imation has something like this called the Odyssey, but their capacity only goes up to 250 gigs. Dell has OEMed this, pitching it as a good removable solution for SMBs. Now, if we can just get a standard like this, but easily indexable and usable in the large size autochangers, this would be great.
