Actually, I'm the cranky one.

I got my compact Sugino 50/36 crankset last week. It won't fit, unfortunately, on my 80's Guercerotti without a new bottom bracket. I don't want to go through that much trouble and perhaps back it out on the vintage bike.

After boxing up the crankset for return I've decided to replace the Octalink BB and Ultegra 6500 on my Fuji commuter bike. With panniers, fenders, and lights its not the designated go fast bike and the Sugino will match it as nicely as the Ultegra crankset does. Now I won't be out the return postage and restocking fee.

Update -

The LBS - on the MUP, a 8 mile RT detour from my commute can change out my BB for $35 total. I'll probably ride there on the way home Thursday and get the compact crankset installed.

I'm having trouble understanding what you are doing. What are you paying the LBS to do?

Remove the current Octalink BB and Ultegra 6500 double crankset from my Fuji World.
Sell me a cartridge square taper BB
Install the new BB and Sugino Compact Crankset I bought earlier.

While I wait on my bike commute home.

I see. I was confused because you mentioned not wanting to change the BB on the other bike.

I figured you would have done that work yourself.

I can repack an old-style BB but not replace it with a cartridge BB. The Blue Goose, Geurcerotti, has mostly Campy and I'd like to keep it reasonably period correct. I was hoping to try out the compact crankset but be able to restore the original Campy Record crankset quickly. That's not possible with a BB change.
The Fuji, is a 2003 frame with a 2007 crankset that closely resembles the Sugino replacement. I can use the old cranset with a new cyclocross frame. That's more than enough incentive to install the compact crank and buy a new frame :)
