I am new to a fixed gear. I put brakes on mine, since it's the law here and because I will ride it with a group in the coming months.

Obviously, one of the great things about a fixed gear is that you don't need brakes. I hear, however, that resisting the pedals to slow down--i.e. "engine braking"--can be bad for the joints. But, I know that lots of folks do it.

What are your thoughts? Short-term damage? Long-term damage? No damage? Gotta get used to it?

Cheers,
Jamie

It's not any worse for the joints than just pedalling, since the mechanics are the same.. You pull up and push down. What's bad for the knees is skidding: hop skids and lock skids, since there's a lot of sudden jerking of the muscles and tendons.

You almost never have to do that, though, if you ride carefully and plan ahead.
