Fifty Plus (50+) - He used to be married . . .

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yesterday my little group (4 of us) had stopped at a popular place for cyclists to stop (OK, it was a Starbuck's. But I don't drink coffee, honest). A group from the bike club in neighboring Sacramento pulled in. Some of the riders in my group know some of the riders in that group. One of the guys was asked how many miles he rode last year. It is well known he doesn't own a car and spends lots of time on his bike. "23,000", was his answer. That's 63 miles + a day!
Yes, he used to be married.

If I total the miles on my Van (used to ferry our college aged kids
from Upstate NY to Milwaukee and Albany NY twice per year), my
Tacoma, my wifes Camry and all my bikes I don't reach 23,000 miles
per year. WOW

I have a friend who put 35k miles on a MOTORCYCLE last year, and I thought THAT was impressive....
Believe I'd have to call BS on that one....:)

If I remember right there's a guy in New York state that does that, or darn close to it. He's been in Bicycling Magazine a couple of times. He's a bit mentally challenged and works as a janitor for a church. The last time I heard he had just passed 1,000,000 lifetime miles.
Somebody who's better than me with a computer may be able to look him up.

He's on bike No. 4 now, and he rides so far and so hard that he wears through the teeth on the chain ring -- a collector's item that he gives to some of his longtime financial supporters. Hoffman has outfitted his bike with all sorts of gadgets, from altimeters to odometers to a radio. When he loads it with all his tools, supplies and gear, it weighs more than 100 pounds.

Bloody incredible guy! Rather articulate, too, as can be seen in this interview:

I'd love to be able to average 20 miles per day, but I know damned well that'll never happen. Too many commitments to intrude for that to be even a dream. But hey? A particular fella averaging 63 miles per day in just one year doesn't sound so ridiculous against the backdrop of the Freddie Hoffman fella now, does it?

That's OK, Starbucks doesn't serve coffee.

That's what I was thinking too. A fellow makes a statement that, on it's face, sounds incredable. Then here comes soft-spoken Freddie Hoffman who can produce records to show that he's doubled it!

Several folks on Bikejournal.com have recorded in the neighborhood of 27,000 miles per year - so they claim, and I have no reason not to believe them.

Wow! I've done 20,000 in the past three years and thought that was pretty good. I am a piker compared to these guys......My best month ever was 966 -- so doing 2 or 4 thousand miles a month, month in and month out, just amazes me. My hat (helmet) is off to them.

Believe I'd have to call BS on that one....:)Way off topic but since you brought it up..
In my youth, when I was working at a motorcycle shop, a guy picked up his new bike just after we opened at 8 am and brought it back at 6 pm that evening for his 500 mile checkup.

A BF member did over 20,000 last year. He races and he said he feels stronger this year as he has backed off somewhat.
Years ago a friend of mine did over 20,000 every year, but he didn't have to work.
I did 12,000 miles in 1990 while working full time, but my job was pretty forgiving of time off.
I could see doing 20,000 if I didn't have a stupid job.
If I was willing to ride to work and back home, I'd ride 52 miles/day just commuting to/from work. Then, if I took an easy 11-mile ride after work (after returning home from the commute), there's 63 miles. I bet someone wouldn't think twice of doing that commute and then taking another leisurely ride later. And anyone who is willing to do that probably wouldn't bat an eye at riding another 63 miles on Saturday and Sunday.

In our younger days (yeah, we're in our mid-70s now) our average was 10,000 a year on our tandem. Best/worst year was 13,000+ miles. Yes, was working full time.
Since we retired we've slowed down quite a bit; are now down to between 5,000 and 6,000 annually.
We do live in sunny Arizona where we can pedal 13 months out of the year!

FRED (http://www.bicyclesource.com/bicycling_glossary)
1) n. a person who spends a lot of money on his bike and clothing, but still can't ride. "What a fred -- too much Lycra and titanium and not enough skill." Synonym for poser. Occasionally called a "barney".
2) n. a person who has a mishmash of old gear, does't care at all about technology or fashion, didn't race or follow racing, etc. Often identified by chainring marks on white calf socks. Used by "serious" roadies to disparage utility cyclists and touring riders, especially after these totally unfashionable "freds" drop the "serious" roadies on hills because the "serious" guys were really posers. This term is from road touring and, according to popular myth, "Fred" was a well-known grumpy old touring rider, who really was named Fred.
I think maybe we've found Fred (2). Freddie Hoffman. He doesn't sound grumpy, but his abruptness because of his brain injuries might put some people off though.
I doubt that it was Fred DeLong.
I knew a bloke in Britain who regularly racked up between 20,000 and 27,000 miles a year. He only recently retired. 23,000 miles a year certainly isn't out of the question.

I have a friend who does not drive and does well over 25,000+ a year. If you do the bike journal thing I think his name is cycletronic or something like that. Very admiral, not for me, but I respect him.

I hope Hubby and I will be doing this like you are at whatever age you are. You both look great! Are those bike caps hanging on the wall behind you?

Speaking of commitments, how's your son doing, Catweazle? Hope you're all hanging in there. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

He's doing fine and keeping in good spirits, TruF, and thanks for asking :)
The two of us had Mrs. CW a bit taken aback the other day, when we were joking around and I suggested that she should perhaps be a 'good mum' by stripping him down and vacuuming him down, so he didn't shed all over the carpet and furniture!
Prognosis remains good, and he's responding to treatment as well as could be hoped. And I love him all the more, if that's even possible, for inspiring me to this cycling activity :D

Tandem pilot is the 'old guy with the facial hair'; stoker is the petite one holding shoes in her hands.
Yes, those are bicycle caps on wall, among lots of other bike related stuff on 3 garage walls (saves on painting them there walls).
Got to have matching stuff when you ride TWOgether on a tandem!
Ages are 75/73 . . . happily married for only 53 years (she tells me I'm still on probation)!
