hey all.
i'm wondering if anyone has tried to put some super fat 29'er knobbies on their cx bike. i'm not worried about clearance, but i'm wondering if they will fit on my 700c rim? are true 29'er rims wider to accomodate larger tire beads, etc?
whats the deal?
thx in advance.

yeah, 29er rims are usually wider. i use the rim's recommended tire width as a guide, but am not afraid to exceed it. if the max recommended width is 28mm i'd probably skip the 29er tires but some rims like delgados are known for being able to run both.
It's not going to break the rim or anything...I just put a 45mm panaracer fire cross (= about 1.8) on the front of my cross bike. The rim has a max tire diameter of maybe 32. I think. Anyways the only difference is it might push the tire into a more rounded shape. Not a big deal if you're running low PSI anyways, in my opinion.
i run delgato's on my 29"er. also, i know a few people who even run open pro's on their 29"ers. the only real problem with that is if you're trying to run super low psi in a tire with stiff side walls... my friend rolled his front tire off a few years ago! he was running 20 psi though. however, it seems 29" tires keep getting better and better.

mark, I don't think he's worried about circumference, but about running the wide 29er tires on narrower cross rims (like open pros)

yes, exactly.

I think you can run up to 2.1" tires on 21mm rim, which is the typically road width.
Mrbubbles,
this your CX? Makes me rethink Surlys. Great looking bike and build up.

mr.bubbles, I saw those pics on the mostercross thread over in the 29er section at mtbr. Cool stuff. When I get back from spring break I'll try to get a pic up of my "trail bike" (K2 Enemy with that Panaracer stuffed up front). Still trying to decide on a good tire in the 38 range for in back, but It'll probably wait as I need new road tires too.

Nope, it's from a monster cross thread over at mtbr.com. Inspired me to put together a monster cross bike later this year when winter comes. A bike capable of 23mm and 40mm wide tires, the awesomeness.
With proper inflation, you can exceed the rim width by a very large margin. Some of the 29er bikes I have seen sold are already doing that. Just don't let the psi get too low.
I'm running about 30 in that 1.8. No problems yet.
I've run 29er tires on a delgado cross rim, got them specifically for that purpose as I use the wheels for both cross and my 29er...
King hubs and delgado cross rims work just perfect.
