undoubetly Metallica. They need to stop ruining the good days with their new crap music already.
Fixed.
I know this is old, but oh well.
Damn, you guys listen to some crap.
Uncle Tupelo
Son Volt
Calexico
Cracker
Neko Case
Jenny Lewis
Slaid Cleaves
The Band
CCR
And for Pete's sake no one mentioned Neil or Dylan?
I like the Band of Gypsies choice, Hendrix at his peak. But for durability and sheer eclecticism, and genius fusion of American music styles, it's Little Feat.
We talkin strickly American ?.. okay.
That's pretty easy actually.
3. Coltrane: the classic quartet.
2. Hendrix: A band of Gypsys
1. Fishbone.
All done!
Just American, my a**....
Scorpions
Parliament
'Zep'
Black Sabbath
Temptations (pre-'75)
Heart (Nancy can BEND a guitar, and Ann could sing better than Tracy Lords could ****)
Twisted Sister

Of course there's no way of determining "best". With that disclaimer, I'll have to nominate the Beatles. At least in the baby boom era. If for nothing else besides their influence on everyone else.
But when you consider entire careers, my favorite can only be The Who. I have a great deal of respect for The Rolling Stones, too.
After these Big Three some honorable mentions should go out to The Guess Who, the Alice Cooper band and The Lovin' Spoonful.

No-one has mentioned one of the most influential rock and roll bands of all time... their 1969 live album "Silent but Deadly" is easily the equal of Frampton Comes Alive and "The Incredible Flight of Icarus P. Anybody (1969)" was surely an influence on the Who's later work.
Their body of work now spans over 40 years.
We are of course talking about Nigel, Derek, and David... better known as Spinal Tap.

........... Herb Alpert :D

I'm a mostly classic rock kinda guy, but I played the trumpet all through school. I wore out a couple of Herb Alpert albums when I was a kid. I was also always a big Doc Severenson fan. Also liked Chuck Mangione when he was popular.

Beatles.
But jazz groups have to be in a different category... and too many to choose from... for me. Can't argue with Miles Davis or Coltrane.
I have a special place for Art Tatum, esp. when he teamed with Ben Webster

Is Celine Dion a band?
Celine Dion is a band of mutually symbiotic organisms in an envelope of mostly water.

I'm with Erick and Poppa,
King Crimson!
Prince, Talking Heads, Birthday Party/Bad Seeds, Iron Maiden, Fleetwood Mac are some other faves.
I'm just going by outfits that I've kept the most records by and can listen to them over and over for the rest of time.

Roxy Music.
Of course after Brian Eno left the flavor of the music changed but Bryan Ferry's vocals, Phil Manzanera's guitar and Andy sax and oboe still made magic. Songs like "Both Ends Burning" "Editions of You" and "A Song for Europe" are passionate, witty and enduring.
Steely Dan.
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker brought sonic sophistication and lyric poetry to the masses. Solid Quality. Funny, Brutal and Mysterious.

Exodus = best metal band ever. Motorhead= best hard rock band ever. Ministry= best Industrial type ever.
Metallica= thieves, connivers and liars. I must admit though, the one of the many songs they stole called 'Blitzkrieg' was a pretty good version.

P.S. Metallica does not make the top twenty for what it's worth either.;)
Actually, Metallica is (or were) on top of the pile for quite a while. People just don't realize what kind of thieves, connivers and liars they truly are.

Metallica is way up there for Blackened alone. GREAT, great song. They could have stolen every other song they've ever done and I'd still think they were awesome for that.
However, Mustaine > Hammett.
Exodus is fly, but I prefer their new stuff to their old.
As far as straight up thrash goes, methinks one of the crowning achievements (besides the excellence that is BLACKENED) is Annihilator's Never Neverland album.
My opinions have changed since I posted this thread. I no longer think Metallica is the best and I have no idea what band is the best overall. I will say Mastodon is a bunch of crunchy mofowkas tho. Sooooo good.

Whatever is playing normally. When you have a few hundred LPs alone I think it's pointless and my biggest concern is will the artist be ALIVE before have a chance to I see them?

If, by stage presence, you mean huge, anatomically correct pig balloons floating around the arena, you are correct.

I played trumpet in school also. That is probably why over the years, I have listened to a lot of Herb A., Doc S. and Chuck M. and other great horn players.
Oh yeah, I also relly liked the "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" album by Herb Alpert when it came out. I was about 13. When my parents bought that album, the National Geographics faded to the shelf.
yeah yeah yeahs are my favorite band. followed by sigur ros, radiohead, and the strokes.
Pink Floyd definitely one of my favorite.

I'll throw in my selection for Pearl Jam. I've been a die-hard fan for about 13 years now, this was after their 5th album(Yield) because during their prime years(Ten, Vs and Vitalogy era) I was still a pre-teen. There was just something about Vedder's lyrics that caught my attention during my teens.
There was a 3-year period between 1998-2002 where I exclusively listened to them. I was a little bit obsessive... ;)
