You are just trying to make the rest of us look like wimps :p . I'm going to be swimming in Hawaii just around that date, actually. It'll be the first time I've gone swimming in over 15 years...

I recall a quote somewhere from this site of a person who said they liked triathlons except for the running and swimming parts.

Have fun, Tom!

I did my first tri last year- definitely a fun time.

The really cool thing about triathlons though, is the incredibly high regard people hold for those who participate in them regardess of distance or difficulty of the event. To be honest, the tri was probably the easiest athletic event I did last year, but for some reason people are always impressed.

One thing, I don't care if I cross the line first or last, I'll just cross the line :D

Tom, my goal for 2008 is an olympic distance triathlon. My only goal is to complete it, not compete in it. I can swim, bike and run now, as that is what I have been training for, now I just have to find a date that will work in my area to complete one.

I'm fairly certain I got all of the tri-bug worked out of my system back in the early 90s.

how long? i have been thinking about the sprint ones, but i always wish the biking was longer. the olympic length involves too much running for me

I said that about the sprint distances also, but now that I have decided I don't want to be "fat" running is helping me get better and I am actually enjoying the work out that running is giving me. I am not sure that I can do a 10k, but I have some events in my schedule that will be 10k running, I just need to be able to complete them.

I plan on doing a few sprints this summer.

That said, I hate running.

That is all.

It's a great idea, because of the quitting smoking thing. When I quit, I immediately started running, seriously training, and it was the focus on that that really pulled me through. A triathlon is just the sort of weird goal-oriented activity that would really help you out right now. Good luck.

Also, running and swimming are awesome.

You're on your own Tom. Good luck.

I grew up swimming but I hate swimming competitively almost as much as I hate running competitively.

Although, I've been considering a friendly biathlon recently. There is one in my hometown every September.

I just don't see gearing up for a 25 mile (or whatever) bike ride. If they had an event like a 1 mile swim, 75 mile bike ride, 3 mile run (ok fine, jog, walk? crawl!) I'd be all over it.

+1 on Your First Triathlon and all of Joe Friel's books. I virtually live by the triathlete's training bible right now.

I've been tri training all winter. All I can say is, get in the pool soon.

I've done 2 IM's. my first Tri was an Ironman event. My MTB teamate and I thought it would be cool to show those tri guys how we do. Much pain and suffering but not as bad as a 24 hr MTB event. Being large and running is bad on your joints and real bad for the cartilage in you spine so be sure to keep a good set of sneakers on board. My favs were the Brooks "beast" even though they were a tad bit heavy, now I like the New Balance M1010. In addition to Friel's "bible" be sure to check out Total Immersion's book http://www.totalimmersion.net/ for the swim part.

Good luck and remember to have fun!

you know, i would totally do a triathlon, but shorten it to a biathlon. i'd swim and bike, but skip the running. my knees are really bad, and i'd never make it. i'd also be really really slow in the other 2 parts, but i dont think i'd care if i won or how i finished.

Go to a running shoe store and expect to spend about an hour there getting the right shoe for the way you walk and run. Then plan on spending $100 + on the right pair of shoes. It made all the difference for me. Then I got my wife to believe me and she is doing some short runs now and is working on getting longer runs each week. The proper shoe makes a big difference.

Buying a pair of Brooks or Nike because that is the "brand" you like, doesn't make it the right shoe for your running type.

Also get some decent swim goggles and hit the pool and have FUN with it. I am.

Agreed, this is the kind of event i would like to see.

I may try to get my fiance to do a tri with me. She runs all over and I bike and we can both swim pretty well so it would be about split between the events but she has better overall endurance so she might win. :(

The closest I have come to a Triathlon is the Triathlon T-Shirt I picked up at Goodwill. Thats close enough for me.

+1 on this advice! Proper running shoes are the key to a pain-free and enjoyable run. Go to a running shoe store (not just a place like Sports Authority), where they have people who are trained in properly fitting you in the right shoe. Have them analyze your gait and how your foot strikes the ground..from there they will be able to match you up with shoes designed for your specific needs. Running shoes will fall into 3 different categories - Stability, Motion Control, or Neutral...a good running shoe store will be able to determine which type of shoe you need.

As for swim goggles...I recently got myself a pair of Aquasphere Kaiman goggles, and they are simply awesome...especially if you were contact lenses. I'm doing my first sprint tri this June in Illinois...and I'm so excited. Been wanting to do one for the past ten years...finally committed this year and sent in my $80 entrance fee, so no turning back now.

Good luck with your tri!
