Pulled the dish right out of the ground.
I noticed that there were only a few shows saved on the Tivo other than the news.
Buying the iTunes or other down loads of those shows is far cheeper than cable.
All the news shows I like are on the net.
Realized I was paying for something I already had.

The tv has gone the way of the land line.

We're close to doing the same. $70 /mth for cable that is rarely watched.

I called them up to kill HBO. "John Adams" is good but all of the rest of their good shows are gone and there is not enough else for me. And I got to thinking, there ain't enough on the whole rest of the dial for me come off the hip either, so I killed the whole thing.

Without starting one of those whitepeople threads--I can't remember the last time I watched television. There's nothing on of interest. I've only kept the bare minimum cable going because every once in a while I have relatives staying who need that TV fix while I'm at work...

Pulled the dish right out of the ground.I was at my wit's end with commercials a few years ago, and considered getting a TiVo (~$300-400, plus monthly fee) or building my own DVR ($600+) to get rid of them. I did the same as you did, and realized that there really wasn't that much I'd be missing. So instead of spending all of that money, I just pulled the cable out of the back of the TV. I'm not going to get preachy or anything, as what works for one may not work for another, but I'm very happy with my decision, as it's worked out well for me.

i never got cable service to begin with. why pay for the privilege of viewing ads when you can download most anything ad-free online?

Well, us old people remember a time when cable WAS ad free, and the internet barely existed...:p .

All the shows I like haven't had new episodes in months. I hate seasons. I don't have a TV, but I have bittorrent!

My wife is addicted to cable. If it was up to me I'd sell the TV to the neighbor and stick with my internet. ;)

Hmmm.... :imagines what life would be like w/o TV and saving $90 a month:

Nope... not worth it. I love having my premium movies that I don't watch but listen to while I'm spending too much time on bikeforums.net

kudos to those with the willpower to do it though!

We live in France. With Satellite plus, we get nine premimum movie channels. TV stations from over 30 various countries. Mostly news stations. and 100 first tier stations. We pay 39 euros a month. Considering movie rental fees, we have no beef. We love movies. And the movie line up is far better than HBO in the US. Why. HBO in the US, used to cost us over 70 dollars.

I hate tv. I just pray that everyone else loves it, or else I'm gonna have to get a real job one of these days. So please, keep watching tv, or I won't be able to buy bikes no more. Oh yeah, or feed my kids. And pay the mortgage.

I don't pay a dime for my satellite dish network which includes most all pay-per-view channels and special events. All you need is a FTA (free to air) receiver and a dish.

Reminds me of a little song...

---

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin' out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't got for help...no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks..
Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin'room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

We went without satellite or cable for a year or so. In the end it did not work for us and we rehooked it up.
Thank goodness. Right now I am unable to ride a bike. Things would be mind numbing around here without the tv.

You will notice, that many of the posters did not forego watching TV, they just got rid of their service provider and watch stuff they download, or recorded media.

I shun my computer after work. I hate the freaking thing. Spend 12 hrs a day on a computer at work and I have very little desire to use it at home.

We do watch the ocasional movie from dvd. I spend more time here than I should though. ;)

I didn't have TV service for 6 years...until this year.

I waited until I could get set up with a DVR and a Slingbox. Now I can watch on one screen and browse on the other. :D

I actually got cable this year. I went about 8 years without it. It was cheaper and a faster internet with cable. So I got the min. and got rid of the lan line. Now I only have cell phones and cable. They didn't offer internet without at least the basic cable when I first got it. This year they are letting you have internet by itself so I will probably do away with the tv again. I am afraid my kids will hate me for it, but they will be better off.

I've had a few withdrawal symptoms, CNN for one.
I actually have to pay attention to "All Things Considered" because they have actual content in their stories.
CNN is better background noise.

I would love to get rid of satellite, but our internet and the phone landline are all bundled ( I tried to get rid of the landline too, but that was a no-go there)...besides, after my surgery, I had problems sleeping---which is normal--I would watch TVLand late-night at 3-4 in the AM before I could fall asleep...

Tim C.

Altogether, though, Discovery, the Hitler (History) Channel, the Military Channel, Animal Planet, and a few others are actually quite interesting.

The tv has gone the way of the land line.

It just occurred to me that the only reason I have a land line (other than DSL), is that my DishNetwork service requires it to get daily programming updates!

Can somebody explain to me why a SATELLITE PROVIDER wouldn't be able to provide programming via their own SATELLITE CONNECTION? It's gotta be some kind of monopoly agreement with the phone companies.

Although I like a good movie (usually rent), I don't watch much TV (but my SO does, and you have to watch at least un poquito to keep up with modern culture). Broadcast only for me though, I ain't payin' fo no cable

We're considering dropping Comcast. $70 a month is toooo much. We're thinking about switching to Directv. Looks like it will be about $40 a month.

Netflix is amazing.
We use Netflix for the days when there's nothing on cable worth watching and to catch up on shows were we missed episodes.

Netflix pisses me off because they can't handle OS X.

I don't have it connected to my land line. Heck, I did not have a land line when we hooked it up.
Our Directtv receiver downloads the updates via satellite.
