Cat 5.

You chose poorly….

Lining up, I picked out about 3 guys that would be suitable for me to draft. My minimum requirements are either 6 ft tall and/or 185 lbs. I picked one and within 200 yards of the start, he was getting gapped. I came around him and proceed to go anaerobic just to catch the back of the lead group. Within a half lap the field was already beginning to get spread out and the guy I was behind was falling off. Dang. I go around and this happens again about 2 more times so within two laps, I’m about 20 yards back from what is left of a pack. So I just settle in to a very uncomfortable pace. I start to hear this sound like a cross between a rasp and a whistle only to realize it is me trying to breathe. I think I may have sprained a lung.

I am the vortex, the safe haven…

On lap 5 or 6, as the sun is setting nicely, I look down at my computer to see what kind of pace I’m holding and notice shadows behind me. I turn and there are 3 guys using my massive bulk as a wind break. Note to self. Pay attention to what’s going on behind as well as in front of you. I immediately call bull****, pull out and let them do some work for awhile. Two of them take their turns working, but one guy, I call “ne’r do pull”, will not take a turn at the front, even with some mild yelling (and yes, he did end up finishing in front of me, the brilliant bastage).

With 5 laps to go, we start lapping people and as we go by, guys start jumping on the end of our group. I take a final pull with two laps to go and when I pull out our group has gone from 4 to at least eight and I get stuck at the back and haven’t the energy to try to work my way back up. I would have been sprinting for 20th or so anyway, but I just wonder if the guys we lapped were placed in front of me.

Doesn’t matter. Next week… I will crush them all.

Did they fix that pop-up manhole cover thing?

Did they fix that pop-up manhole cover thing?

Which one?

I think I hit every metal plate on the course. Once, it was so loud, it unnerved the the guys in front of me so badly I thought they were going to go down.

I run gatorskins on this course just because of the horrible conditions.

Great report wanders--thanks!

Gatorskins, metal plates, manhole covers, wheelsuckers...sounds like you had your hands full!

It's not imperative to be on a guys wheel as long as you're in the pack. Next time just stay in contact with the field, and worry about being "on" a wheel only when it's single filed out.
