I've ridden bikes on and off for 30 years. Schwinn 3-speed tank(early 70s), Peugeot 10-speed(mid-late 70's), 27" Nishiki Olympic 12(1980-2003), and a month ago purchased a red 61cm 2003 Lemond Tourmalet 27-speed and have since added Profile Design AirStryke aerobars. I use to play basketball and jog alot, but after my knees gave out I switched to cycling to keep my weight somewhat under control. When weather and schedule permits, I commute 25 miles RT 3x/week. I try to combine exercise and commuting while riding to/from work, so I try to push myself where its safe to do so. I am 6' 6" tall and weigh 235-240. I had a lot of problems with broken spokes on my rear wheel on my Nishiki, even after buying a new wheel. The Lemond is a little on the small side, but I bought the largest frame that I could find in stock after shopping all over Orange County. I did not want to pay for a custom-built frame. My longest ride was as an adult leader on a Newport Beach to San Diego Boy Scout 2-day ride in 1995. I look forward to more frequent longer recreation rides now that I have a nice cycle, if I can just stay alive while commuting! Recently bought a new/brighter taillight, yellow helmet and jersey. Yesterday a young women in an SUV pulled into the striped bike lane right in front of me (without looking, of course) in order to pass stopped/slow-moving cars on the right so she could turn right at the next intersection 50 yards down the road. I am now in the market for a LOUD horn I can quickly activate (Megahorn?) and am wishing to find a USA distributor for Revuu rear-view mirror helmets. Also wishing that someday somebody creates an eye movement targeting system that enables cyclists to stall the engines of vehicles that are pulling out in front of them. I'M SERIOUS!

For the compact portable air horn, check Boat Supply stores. They sell thenm as fog horns. Quite loud.

...And welcome to the forums.

Check out www.ocw.org or www.bikeirvine.org if you are looking for social rides and fellow commuters.
As for rear view mirrors, here's someone local who makes them out of bottle caps!
