im looking at buying a new fixed gear. my old conversion is a HUGE raleigh super record frame. these days im seeing the largest frames being around 59 or 61cm. im really digging the rush hour, but its largest size is 59cm. would that be entirely too small for me?

You should see if this bike (http://cgi.ebay.com/Tom-Teesdale-Track-Pursuit-Frame-Campy-Gold-Crankset_W0QQitemZ170202759583QQihZ007QQcategoryZ98084QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is still available. It was sold by the poster jvan12345. It might be too small for you, but I'm not sure how much luck you're going to have unless you go full custom.

Just how tall are you? I'm 6'4" and ride a 61 comfortably with a 130mm stem. I do have a fairly small inseam for my height though.

Do you know what a mongoloid is? Or are you just a Devo fan?

a 6'4 guy around town here rides a 61. The good news for you is that used, huge frames are cheap.

no i know what it means, im not actually a mongoloid, but it helps to get across the point that im a big blundering giant.

i'd say check IRO (http://www.irofixedgear.com), most of their frames go up to 62. i don't know how much bigger than that you'll be able to find without going custom, as was said.

;) Understood. Would have been funnier if you were a Devo fan.

Sorry, OT. Good luck finding a frame!

Oh uh, guess I could have retained that from the title, sorry. I think custom is your only option.

6'5" guy here.
Bikes I have ridden:
IROs and Surly Steamroller both come in a 62 - for no real reason, I find that the Steamroller feels bigger. Bianchi Pista comes in a 61 - because the bottom bracket is a little higher and more authentically "track" than the two l listed above, it feels about the same size as the IRO and surly. However, I am concerned that none of the above will be big enough for you.

Bikes I have not ridden:
I would swear that there is someone who makes a 63, but I cannot remember who. Bikesdirect's Motobecane Messanger supposedly comes in a 64. The 64 is not listed on their sizing chart, so I can't say how the size really compares, but that may be the best route.

If you are looking for high end:
There was guy at the Velodrome in the twin cities who rode a ridiculously huge Orbea frame, but it could have been custom (Orbea does custom alu frames). For the money it would cost to go that route, I would look at a local custom builder. I don't know where you are, but chances are there is a framebuilder in your area who would be quite happy to work with you. There are some builders out there who will make remarkably cheap custom track frames.

Good luck

i'm curious, what do 6'6" people ride when they want to ride freestyle bmx?

I don't know about 6'6" people, but 6'5" me would use a 24 Redline when he wanted to f' around during dead time during the winter at the shop - occasionally even a small frame 26" mtn bike. I could never do anything with 20" wheels.

There was some guy who was almost as tall as me who would come in with his 20" wheel BMX bike for service. He didn't look completely stupid on it, just sort of stupid.

It is not available as it should be arriving at my house later today. But, I am getting rid of one of my track frames to make room for this. I am getting rid of my 2001 64cm Fuji track, PM me if anyone is interested in it.

I ride a 62cm Mark V, and it's not really a 62. The seat tube is 58 and the top tube is 59. I'm 6'2" so it fits me well. It could work for someone larger though. I definitely would never want a frame larger than my Mark V.

How do bikes with such long tubes feel when climbing? I bet with the weight of someone so tall + the longer tubing, the whole thing moves and bounces like a trampoline.

I just want to say that I just bought a frame which I'm pretty sure is 66. At 6'4 the frame is almost too big for me

That's basically right. It's the reason why, when Ondřej Sosenka attempted (and bested) the hour record, he used a 54cm frame with a giant seatpost. The prevailing wisdom was that a frame large enough to fit him properly wouldn't be stiff enough for the record, and could bend and reach it's fatigue limit before the hour was up. Also using a small frame would let him shave off a few hundred grams.

interesting... i was always under the impression that the small bike was used because uci for whatever reason limited the wheelbase on bikes attempting the hour.
regardless, the benefits are apparent now that you point them out.

yeah my iro is a great fit. it took a while to get everything just perfect for me, but when it's set up right it really feels great. the one thing i wish i could have is longer cranks. sometimes, even with 170s, i feel like a clown spinning really little cranks.
with that said: i have about a foot of seatpost exposed and a 110mm stem with about eight inches of bar-stem drop. i have really really long legs and long gangly arms, so when you look at my bike you have to consider that it isn't for a normal sized person.

the above picture is kind of the reasoning i used behind setting up my iro. i knew i wasn't gonna find a 64cm frame that i liked, there are tons of '70s & '80s bike boom conversions to be made in the larger sizes, but in new off the shelf track bikes not much about 62cm. so i got the 62cm, which is probably just a hair too small for me, and set up with plenty of seatpost and a long stem. i'm sure some people will try to tell me i should get a larger frame and that i'm not riding a bike that's properly sized for me, but i disagree. i ride this bike to class and work every day and long rides when it's nice, and i definitly think i did a good job sizing it up. i worked with what i had and i think i made a pretty decent-fitting whip.

rode bmx for a good number of years actually, up until i was about 6'5". got too big so i took a few years off, now im back into dirt jumping on a spec p.1, 26" wheels n sh*t

and im mostly looking for a commuting/beating bike. not looking to spend a whole gripload of money for something custom. i just need something more efficient than my p.1 for commuting and newer and nicer than my current conversion

pretty darn close here, I'm 6'4" and just recently picked up a 27" 88 Schwinn World Sport. I'm sure it's too big, but it's much more comfortable than the old 58cm I had.

i had a 6'5'' friend that rode 20'' bmx. he could hop over park benches like it was a breeze. he also looked incredibly uncomfortable when ever he wasn't doing something cool. it was like watching a full grown man sit in an elementary school desk. he used to race mountain bikes out west. now he's a semi-pro pole vaulter.
