As this is the only place I'd heard or read the word "emo" in 2 or 3 years (in the "ugly mugs" thread"), I figured it would be a suitable place to post this:
The spark came first in Queretaro on March 7. An estimated 800 young people poured into the city's Centro Historico hunting for emos to beat the crap out of. They found some. The next weekend it spread to Mexico City, where emos faced off against punks and rockabillies at the Glorieta de Insurgents, the epicenter of emo social space in the capital. There's also been reports of anti-emo violence in Durango, Colima, and elsewhere.

I lived in Kansas City back when TGUK were making it big. I was always more of a Coalesce guy though, and honestly Matt was kind of a ******tard.
Edit - it's nice to see someone else around here that actually remembers what the original emo bands sounded like though.

I like alleged "EMO" music. But I feel shafted when I hear the term "EMO" used to describe anything essentially sissy. Its become a term for haters.
The biggest issue I have with it is that EMO I would wager is just short for EMOtional. No?
If thats the case... isn't ALL music essentially EMO? I mean, the driving force behind music is emotion?

Only of SSFG could we have a thread with pictures of Still Life.
The weirdest thing about emo to me was how people came to be known and self-identified as "emos."
Also, who knew there were emo kids in Mexico? Certainly not I.

haha nice picture. I always associated emo with Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate and that whole thing. I don't know how sad middle schoolers with greasy bangs and white belts and scene girls on MySpace taking pictures from above became "emo".

apparently there are armies of teenagers the world over with choppy black hair and eyeliner who are unwilling to stand up for themselves.
i'm going to go back to my rites of spring and policy of 3 records and start considering myself old.
hopefully this emo revolution will finally bring the indie intifada to full public attention.

I dont think anyone thinks of The Get Up Kids or Sunny Day Real Estate or any of the other bands that were, in fact "emo" that came from the post hardcore punk movement. It's just come to mean overly emotional, whiny and angsty. I dont much care, I remember and still listen to good emo bands, call me what you will. Music is music, and if it's good, i'll lend an ear.

i was at a music festival (that mostly features electronic music) with my ex girlfriend a year ago or so and these kids who looked to be around 14 ran by us screaming EMO! EMO! YOU ARE EMOS! at us. they seemed very angry about it. i guess we're lucky we weren't beaten.

still life, but i guess the url kind of gave that away.
and as far as tguk and sunny day real estate being emo, i'd label them as that. but they're more of the next step. that's just what i think. and i think that if you follow the evolution of the genre, these new bands are a natural progression. i think the crowds these bands draw and the way they are marketed takes credibility away from them.

and as far as the progression goes, i wouldn't say that these kids are the next step in the evolution of that genre. 5-10 years ago these would have been the numetal/"goth" kids, the aesthetic/attitude hasn't changed much.
i believe the natural progression of emo/punk/hardcore still exists in the diy communities around the world that continue to support/encourage positive ideas. but whatever.
let's talk about bikes.

get up kids is probably up there on my all time favorites list. it's a shame a bunch of ****ty bands had to come around and ruin the genre. i've also got a giant hard on for promise ring and the weakerthans.
edit: i refer to most of my old favorites as "post-punk indie rock/pop" (thank you fourfa.com).

embrace, cap'n jazz, saetia, mineral, those were the days. mid-90's, riding around all summer looking for girls.
emo is totally dead though. those of us old enough to remember emo know it. it's just sad that kids are latching on to something without really knowing what it is.
oh well.
emo.
the anti-emo attacks in mexico seemed more homophobic than anything else, from the looks of it.
i think they're confusing "hipsters" with "emo kids" btw.

MASHboard confessional
Back in 2001 or so, me and some friends started a band called Moshboard Confessional. It sounded like Warzone covering Dashboard. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) it only lasted 3 practices before we realized how stupid it was. We then switched it up and started John Crucial Mellencamp and it lasted about the same amount of time. We then focused on drinking and that's gone well for awhile.

well, that singing sounded like ****, and the whole frat boy thing may be tongue in cheek, but i'm ****ing tired of all the chads in columbus that i see every goddamn day, and i know some hardcore kids are pretty dudebro-ish too and that just bugged the **** out of me.

...yes, yes it was sadly. Champion was a very good band though, and the hardcore scene turns out many bros but also many good folks. I dont much care for the shenanigans that surround it much anymore though.
