Wow! Cycling always has a suprise in store. I certainly got one at dawn this morning. I had one of those twilight zone experiences. It is very hard to put into words what happened, at least in words that adequately describe the situation. I wish I would have had digital camera or better yet a movie camera.

Anyway I ride on a dike that protects our town from flood. As I approached the dike I saw two huge lakes that had suddenly appeared in what used to be newly planted green wheat fields. (look like huge lawns) I couldn't help but think, I know it didn't rain last night? Well once I got up on the dike I started hearing the noise. This was an ocean of geese, not water. I am talking about thousands of them. I have seen flocks of geese with hundreds, (used to hunt a lot) but this was an oasis of Geese. As I approached the geese it became ever so louder and I knew I had a decision to make. I had to gather up a lot of courage or turn around and go back.

There were several acres of geese on both sides of the dike and I had to ride directly through them. So I started cranking hard. Man o' man the closer I got the noise soon became a roar. The geese started to take flight by the dozens. THen by the hundreds. By the time I got between both of the previously grounded flocks, the sky had grown dark, they were so thick they were blocking any sunlight. THe noise was deafining. It really made me stop and think. Man is supposedly supperior to a goose but the roles were reversed here. I was a dead man if they possessed the intelligence to attack me. If only a small fraction of the geese had decided to relieve themselves over my head I would have been suffocated instantly.

Well, ,I made it through but talk about an adrenaline rush. I got to a road that bisects the dike and people were pulling off the road and asking, "what was that?" My face was to numb from the cold and my heart was racing too fast to adequately give them an answer. So I just rode on and had a very interesting cylcing experience to think about for the rest of the ride and many years to follow.

Thanks for allowing me to share...

Pretty exciting - no I have never had that happen, but have tried to go through a herd of about 20 horses riding my bike and ringing my bell.

I don't recommend that approach any more. These same horses knocked my wife down when we were walking in the same area, and stepped right over her (fortunately missing anything vital) and it was totally scary. A horse is a pretty big animal. She ended up in the emergency room with some nasty bruises.

Come to find out, some other walking folks had been feeding these horses sweets (or whatever you feed horses) in the past - despite the "no feeding the horses" signs - and they were looking for the same from us. One nudged my wife with their nose seeking the food and pushed her over.

We later talked to another person on a bike that had been pushed over by these big animals.

We avoid that area nowadays!!

The pasture is now being developed and it will not be long until the horses are replaced with a self-storage facility!!

WOA! All those geese overhead would cause piles of concern, and what if they found out I had a down pillow. Seriously, that's alot of geese.

I saw a huge flock of blackbirds (something small anyway) once, not quite in the same league, but an awsome sight all the same. The noise of a thousand or so little birds is loud enough, but geese? One on it's own is enough to make me turn and flee, but a huge flock like that, I'd probably poo my pants :(

I have seen a flock of gulls take off from somebody's farm in delaware but not sure if I would want to ride underneath them...

Whatever you do, don't be a newbie and look up with your mouth open like I see some people at the shore do..

The odd part of the situation is that that is was early AM and most of them really didn't want to fly. So I got basically right between them, hundreds on each side before they really took flight. The dike is only 10' wide (riding surface) and the geese were less than 30 yds on each side and they extended on for several football fields.

There is no way possible that they could make an organized exodus away from me. There were far too many of them and I was closing on them far too quickly. I think that is what made it scary. They were freaking out and I was freaking out.

Anyway, this morning it was drizzling and I avoided that portion of the trail. I think I was scared but I will stick to the drizzle story. Anyway I was glad I skipped it when I heard shotgun blasts coming from that direction this morning. Apparently goose season is on and I may have been in the crossfire.

You were not out at Cheyene Bottoms when this happened were you? Because the gesse get just as thick, if not thicker out there.

That's an amazing image, man. Thanks for sharing! One of these days, I really want to get a cellphone with a decent camera in it, just for those sorts of occasions.
