Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Accidentally NJS?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I always subconciously snicker when i hear about someone's new NJS build, mainly taking the stance that restricting builds based on era/region/racing class/etc is sortof a corny idea in a "not that it's any of my business or anything" kinda way.
Today, however, i realized that i've accidentally built a bike with an almost entirely njs drivetrain:
rx-1
suntour superbe pro track
sugino zen
izumi super toughness
eai superstar
I didn't plan it that way, and never would've guessed i've been riding on so much overhyped japanese componentry for this long. Not sure how i never connected the parts.
Anyone else accidentally running an njs (partial) group?

Your cranks and cog aren't NJS as far as I know.
The only NJS **** I rock is a Kashima 5gold and my 75s.

My mountain bike has an njs hub. It seems to work okay for ancient technology.

Whoops, i guess the cog isn't.
Cranks def are. I'll take a pic later if you wanna see the stamp.
Not that it actually matters.
ed: internet wins. mine are 165, but here you go:

My cog/lockring and chain are all NJS, so it appears I'm in the same boat as you. Dura ace and Izumi just happens to be what I ended up with, I dont worry about it. My pedals and clips are NJS as well, but I would venture to guess damn near everyone who rides clips and straps on here has NJS pedal set ups.

my lockring is the only NJS anything.

9 bikes in the house, 7 with clips and straps, not one njs setup.

The thing is that so many track components are NJS, so it's easy to "chance" into them if you buy 1/8" Dura Ace cogs or high-end metal track cranks. For most of us though, the NJS stamp is just incidental.

I went to have a cog and lock ring ripped off a wheel i pulled out of the trash and have it put on my first set of track wheels. Dan spun off the loctited lock ring, was cleaning the crap off it and notice, Dura Ace - NJS , didn't use it, too much loctite buggering it up. But thats the only njs part i have ever owned, a lockring i pulled out of the trash.

the only njs parts ive got are my clips (cheap mks) and my seemingly overpriced toshi singles. turns out that paying $70 AUD for straps was the best idea EVER. ive replaced almost every other part and my toshis are still holding me in no matter how hard i pull.

The way I look at NJS is this: I don't go out of my way to buy things just because they're NJS but sometimes some of the best products happen to be NJS.

It's a stamp of approval and indicates approveable products, it creates a standard. Just like USDA meat (if your into that) or government approved drugs.

Same for me. Nice track components are nice track components, period. World class track racers use Dura Ace NJS just because it happens to be the best. There was a point where I got bit by the NJS fetish bug and wanted to go as much as I could without getting too unreasonable (so no NJS wheels/pedals/chain/saddle basically), but at this point I just like sexy track components period: Campagnolo, Deda Pista, whatever.

I actually went out of my way with my latest build to have no ****mano and no NJS parts whatsoever. ****mano because they already pretty much rule the world of cycling...greedy *******s...and NJS because it's trendy...

So is this cyclical? First everyone wants to get NJS gear, and now the backlash, everyone brags about how they own 3 bikes and not one njs part, or "oh I did not realise it was NJS, or I accidentally slipped on a banana peel and I landed dick first into a pile of NJS parts.....;) I don't think you need to make excuses for using Dura Ace track cranks.....

no, actually my last ride was Italian and had nothing NJS either...oh wait...I did try those ridiculous MKS tensioners...for a day.

Yes Parker, fashions and tastes are indeed cyclical. Look at the 80's. Guys (even rappers) wore a lot tighter pants. Then the early 90's happened, baggy pants were the jam, everyone owned a pair. That went on for a good 10 years. Now you see a guy rocking his JNCO's and you think it looks ridiculous because the mainstream wears more fitting pants, though not tight by any means.
Same deal with skateboarding, it's gone in and out so many times. It's interesting to look at.
Personally I'm not hating, I like NJS frames and own one but can't really consider ever buying another in the next year or few unless there was a killer deal because inflating prices are a *****. And the components are great but not always great per se, i.e. Kashimax saddles, the pedals, etc.

What's nJs?
parkerlewis
03-26-08, 11:07 PM
Andre, let's get a group buy going on some hammer pants. I am thinking we flip it though. Maybe yellow with colorful triangles and pieces of floating grid, printed all over them. Right leg hitched a little, and maybe a fake rolex with an elastic ankle sized band.....
Of course I understand the point of this thread, but just think it is really insecure to be afraid of njs parts at risk of being a 'hipster'.....
andre nickatina
03-26-08, 11:11 PM
It is indeed a sign of insecurity. I know messengers that don't want anything to do with the NJS thing, but then I know other messers that ride NJS frames for work and dudes that weren't even aware that their Sugino 75's had a stamp on them.
It's like the veteran guy that suddenly renounces track bikes because some newbies doing barspins arrived on the scene - great show of dedication right?
Oh and you may also want to get on some jheri curls, hint hint :D
i don't hate (or pretend to reject) njs. i look at it in the same light i do vintage campy or handbuilt or etc. Nothing wrong with any of them, but i do snicker when i hear (often enough) of someone sitting on a 78% built ride for two months because they're waiting to come accross a way overpriced used japanese saddle on ebay to keep it "all njs" when it's just going to be ridden ten miles a day in the street anyway.
my baby is a mix of campy and mizuno carbon, cineli titanium, selle italia, mavic, etc. i picked the parts based on what i liked.
i was really just commenting on the fact that i willingly selected so many njs parts without actually realizing it.
I have a mostly JIS drivetrain...does that count?

Well, technically you guys are both right.
But you know that when a large amount of roadies are going for top of the line these days, they're screaming for Dura Ace...

I had my new DA 7600 HF hubs (they're NJS, yes, and I love them plenty) laced at my LBS which is a proper roadie central around here. While my wheels were ready and sitting in the shop and waiting for me to pick them up, apparently every regular customer oooh'ed and aah'ed in front of them and several people actually tried to buy my wheels...

That's a myth, they lighten your wallet quite a bit but not enough for any real performance increase.

No problem. I actually think NJS parts are cheaper in certain situations. I picked up some Nitto bars, not cause they are NJS, and they are considerable cheaper than Deda bars or some carbon fiber alternative.
parkerlewis
03-27-08, 08:21 PM
All NJS builds are a lot cheaper than all Campa builds, for sure. Also they look damn sexy. For me Araya GOLD are the prettiest rims around. 11.9 profile.
While a lot of guys building njs bikes may not be as educated as some of you guys, I think it is a fair bet that at the end of the build they will not be complaining. Well, maybe Kashimax, and tubulars arent for everyone!
I think the only njs parts you could really call expensive, are the sealed bearing pedals, top tube protectors, steel stems, maybe headsets....

True, its the reason my fixed gear has MKS clips and some of my other road bikes... that and XL is hard to find... though MKS clips have one up in price (shouldn't have given that pair away) I have a couple NJS tange headset lock rings.. anyway want one? cost of shipping... hahaha... Luckily I was able to find a couple sets of Christophe special X clips and one is on my all italian (with a little francais for sprice) track bike.

Bars, cog, lockring and pedals (sylvans) is all for me. Actually, my NJS bars are hanging on my workbench right now, not running drops at the moment. I do wish I'd gone for njs straps though, my ALE singles have not held up even close to as well as I had hoped.
