Besides weight and "bling" factor do carbon cranks offer any additional advantages over Al?

I currently have a standard Campy Centaur Ultra Torque crank and will be purchasing a compact crank. I'm going to stick with Campy Centaur since I'm happy with the performance of the Centaur group as a whole. I'm just wondering if the carbon crank is worth the extra dough?

TIA
DJ

Aluminum cranks are usually stiffer, but carbon has a better stiffness/weight ratio, except in the case of Record-Centaur, I believe, where Record is stiffer and lighter.

I'm not sure how the Centaur carbon rates.

Oh...that clears it up :)

That's what I figured. I'm not really interested in shaving 150 grams or so since my ride isn't a weight weenie to begin.

Thanks for the feedback.

Money better spent on ceramic bearing upgrade at this time then cranks IMO. I had my Ultegra BB upgraded to ceramic for $65 when I had my compact crank put in.

Mr. Beanz

I climb much faster with aluminum cranks. I've never used carbon cranks but the aluminum are much stiffer in my experience.

ericm979

Carbon cranks are laterally stiff but vetically compliant. They'll add at least one mph to your average speed. Carbon cranks will make your calves firmer and your skin smoother, and make you more appealing to members of the appropriate sex.

Fred, I will pretend that makes sense

Keep um coming Beanz. It may not make sense but it's funny none the less.

How do you climb faster with aluminum cranks when you've never ridden carbon?

Same goes for the stiffness.

Hopefully this will make sense http://www.observer.com/node/50905

These KCNC Al cranks @515grams they are lighter than most Carbon cranks.

Carbon cranks are for looks only, they will not make you faster. A stronger engine = better advantage.

Plus carbon cranks are dangerous, carbon usually snaps with NO warning, while Aluminum bends before it breaks. Keep your aluminum cranks.

Not so funny, it just doesn't make sense.

Steel bends, aluminum breaks, and certainly without warning (http://www.photoscene.com/kimandsteve/213/cranky).

That's just probably because it was stocked on a shelf next to a carbon crank.

Wow, with your power NO material has a chance! That crank had a flaw in it from the factory, it was destin to break, probably had an air pocket in it. I've seen an Aluminum engine block leak oil right through the side, no crack, no hole, just came right through the metal.

I had ridden about 15000 miles on those cranks before the broke. I had been an accident a while before and although everything looked fine, it obviously wasn't. There was a stress fracture that eventually caused it to snap. But the fracture was not visible, and when it went, it was without warning.

I don't think Beanz poking fun at your accident. :)

They look like Truvativ Rouleurs?

TruVativ. They were the one thing that was still stock on my TCR, well that and the headset & bottom bracket. The owner of the shop swapped it for another of the same type and sent mine back for warranty replacement. I haven't heard anything since, but he never asked for money so I guess its taken care of.

Yeah, ok! Well I just sent you a nasty PM so I'm sure you'll run and report me to the mods like so many others that poke fun, call names then cry when I return the favor!

I'm sure you had a fever a couple of months ago too?

I wouldn't report that post to the mods. It was so nasty I wouldn't want anyone to see it. Geez. You are going to have to refresh my memory on the other post of mine that you are alluding to.

Oh found it. Pictures of your screen. That was classic.

Oh found it. Pictures of your screen. That was classic.

Yeah, I had a fever that day and didn't like your reponse but I didn't go on the forum and whine like a little baby! And you're right, it was nasty cause I turn into a nasty MOFO when a like crybaby like you runs his mouth!

Mr. Beanz

I don't think Beanz poking fun at your accident. :)

Oh I see! He thought I was making fun of his crash not his writing. Hmm, nope! I'd be the first one to descend GMR just to be the first one back to pick you up if you crashed. The first to lend you a pump or give you my spare tube. Maybe the first to explain how to copy and post a page rather than laugh at you! Well if he ever crashes while I'm around, on my bike or in a support vehicle, he's going to be there a while!:D

In reponse to your post, where you took photographs of your computer screen, I wrote:

Oh man, I'm sorry, I fell on the floor laughing when I saw these! Don't you know how to tale a screenshot?!?!? Actual picures?!?!? Too funny!

To which you replied:

No,have no idea what tale a screenshot means. All I know is when I try to show someone a screen it logs out for those that aren't members.

And I responded (I thought) helpfully:

A screenshot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenshot) is an image of exactly what is on your screen. You don't have to use a camera to take a picture of the screen, the computer knows exactly what is there and you can essentially "ask" for a copy of it.

Contrast to today, your reponse to a post asking about advantages of carbon vs. aluminum cranks:

I climb much faster with aluminum cranks. I've never used carbon cranks but the aluminum are much stiffer in my experience.

And my reponse to you:

That makes no sense.

And my reponse to someone else about the failure of my aluminum cranks:

I had ridden about 15000 miles on those cranks before the broke. I had been an accident a while before and although everything looked fine, it obviously wasn't. There was a stress fracture that eventually caused it to snap. But the fracture was not visible, and when it went, it was without warning.

Yes, I realize there were some typos. Your reply:

Ok, now that doesn't make sense. But it's funny! Bwahahahaha!:D

So I see that you were trying to be funny now that my fever induced haze has passed, but I think your continued behavior speaks more of you than me.

That's ok. I wasn't riled at all up until he sent me a nasty PM. Now he can have the honor of being the only one on my ignore list. Not that I expect him to care.

Mr. Beanz

A race, my 240 to his 115 lbs? I'd be more for a let's see how many times you can press the other guy over your head contest!:D Although I did read his times in a post in the road forum. I believe it was "how fast can you climb this hill?" thread. His times on a 7,000 ft climb wasn't much different in comparison to my best while climbing 10,000ft as far as a ratio when I was in shape t 220 lbs. And I don't race or train the way he does!

But I have done a 22.6 average on a 10 mile flat course from a dead stop (standard roadie) SO it will hae to be a rel long ride, 100 miles or so, solo, no drafting. Or a solo 10 mile flat TT into the wind.:p

This was like a comedy of errors. You're both sweeties and wouldn't be fighting if you were talking in person!

UMD, go to sleep and relax so you will feel better! Don't worry about a nasty PM. Fred got mad when you misunderstood him and sent it. As for the ignore button, you'll find that you won't be able to stand it and you'll take him off. In fact, he could seriously **** with you and keep posting "can you see me now? how bout now?" over and over until curiousity gets the better of you and you take him off ignore. :D

This reminds me of Sir Lance and Beanz all over again.

you guys should have a race to settle this.A stage race. One stage uphill and the second one down. For a tiebreaker they can play quarters until they're both slobbering drunk and kissing each other.
