Motorist shot in road rage incident. Nothing special about that story except it happens to be a cyclist doing the shooting and it happened in Canada. The majority of law abiding citizens here don't go around carrying a gun with them and wouldn't expect to get shot at in a situation like this (road rage), especially from a cyclist! I sure as hell wouldn't want to be a cyclist living in Edmonton right now. They'll be fair game for every chevy-driving redneck out there until they catch this guy.

Ride-by shooter may have brandished gun before
Previous incident with cyclist reported

EDMONTON - A cyclist who shot a driver during an argument in the street Thursday evening may be the same man who pointed a gun at another motorist five weeks ago.

The circumstances and description of the cyclist are similar in both incidents, said police spokesman Wes Bellmore.

Witnesses on Thursday saw a man on a mountain bike riding slowly north along the sidewalk on 95A Street near 112th Avenue around 6 p.m.

The cyclist was seen arguing with two men in a car that was driving slowly along the street in the same direction.

The cyclist stopped, pulled out a handgun and fired four shots at the car, before riding off.

The driver, with a bullet lodged in his right hand, drove two blocks north, then turned onto 114th Avenue.

An ambulance arrived shortly afterward and took the man to hospital, where the bullet was removed.

On Sept. 26, in the same area as Thursday's shooting, a driver reported that he was cut off by a man riding a mountain bike.

The two got into an argument and the driver got out of his car to confront the cyclist, who pulled a handgun from his coat and pointed it. The motorist jumped back in his car and drove off.

The suspect in that incident, which happened around 9 a.m., was described as white with a goatee and dark hair with flecks of grey. He was wearing a black jacket and jeans.

In Thursday's incident, investigators say the men in the car did not know the shooter.

The gunman was described as a white male with a full head of dark hair and a goatee. He rode a mountain bike.

Oh sweet, I was searching google news for this story to no avail. Thx.
Judging by the neighborhood, my guess is the cyclist was a drug courier. I don't see the incident having any effect on the reputation of cyclists here. They'll continue to cut us off as always.

When stories like this get reported, I wish they would say "guy on a bike" rather than "cyclist"

To become violently angry with or without provocation and lash out at some poor schmuck in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm sure you've seen this person in traffic....face beet red, purple vein pulsing in the center of the forehead, pounding the steering wheel with clenched fists. Or in this case, pull a gun, wave it around or just shoot somebody.

I agree but I immediately thought of this previous discussion when I read the article.

Does that make our forum users who ride with a gun "guys on bikes"? The article really doesn't say what happened to precipitate this guy shooting a motorist. It's probably like MadCat said, but you never know.

The first thought that came to my mind was: Is this guy one of the forum members who claims to ride with a gun?

We don't know the answer, of course, but I hope he is not. I would also hope that forum members have more self control than the fellow in the article.

think about it though, that WOULD make motorists stop and think about harassing that guy on the bike.

really, aside from an even temper, keeps you from getting out of your car and slapping someone who cuts you off? the fact that they could beat you up or pull a gun. well, in this case, they can see that they cold probably take you on physically ( cause your on a bike), and they just assume that you don't have agun.

good for the gunman.

You are, of course, making the mistake of assuming they actually need to get out of the car to harass a cyclist -- this isn't the case. I know for a fact that if I had ever so much as threatened a driver around here with a gun I would have been run down long ago. As a consequence, I will continue to ride without a gun, and expect to add many many more km to the 100,000+ that I already have.

Irrespective of any of that, two wrongs don't make a right. Harassment is not a sufficient justification for shooting someone, regardless of the circumstances. Whatever happened to simply rising above and moving on?

ChrisL don't you use one of those small crossbows that straps to your wrist?

I took an old fire extenguisher. I loaded it up with the neighbors' baby's liquid poop, and then put a hose on it. I then compressed it to about 700 PSI and mountied it upside down on the rear of the bike.

So now, if anyone gives me ****, I give it right back.

:D

Great idea, I think.
