I am currently riding a Dahon S1 for my bike/bus commute. While I don't mind having a single speed as most areas I ride are fairly flat, the wheels that came on this bike are all around junk. I plan on replacing the wheels so I have been looking into transforming the bike into a multi-speed bike for the occasional hill or long ride.

I am looking at a couple of options and was hoping for feedback what some of the mechanics think is the best option in terms of durability and ease of use:

1.) Build a internal geared (SRAM, Sturmey, etc) three speed hub and find a sealed front hub.
2.) Get BMX wheelset with sealed hubs and attach a six speed freewheel and the Shimano derailluer that is intended for BMX style dropouts (Hone, I believe).

Information I have:
Front spacing: 100mm
Rear spacing: 110mm

I am leaning toward option two, but would like some input, ideas, etc.

I don't know if you really want to throw so much money into that bike - you can buy a dahon d7 for ~$450 around these parts. 7 speed gearing. Especially if you can't do the labour for this change yourself.

Something to think about at least.
