So i'm riding home on my bike tonight down oakland ave in Milwaukee WI and a car pulls up next to me and decides it would be a really great idea to throw a big soda or something to that nature at me while i'm on my bike going about 20mph or more. Not only could this have very well killed me if i were to have fallen which would probably result in falling in front of the car but i really just want to know what would posses someone to do this. I'm a biker, obeying all the laws of the road and here i am having to deal with this ****ing ******* who thinks this would be funny, so i attempt to chase them and i only get the first half of the license plate and the kind of car. so if anyone is in the UWM area or in Milwaukee for that matter and sees a Silver Chevy Malibu with the first part of the license plate "263" please let me know so i can tell the cops to follow up on the report i already filed.

As a side note i want people to realize how ignorant this is. i very well could've been injured horribly! people need to realize that bikes are a part of the road, in fact bikes were on the road far before cars were so SHARE THE ROAD! I know anyone reading this wouldn't have done something like this but really be cautious, it's getting nicer out and people will be biking. Don't be dumb, think of what you're about to do and who it's going to be effecting.

How could you only get half of the license plate? I don't see how that's possible.

If you're in a situation where you're angry or scared, it is hard to remember random strings of numbers. Remembering the first half of a license plate is easier than the whole thing, and more useful than nothing.

Oh and OP: That sucks. good luck finding him.

it was just a member of the (mali)bu-crew.

I take it they were wisconson plates?

edit: Consider them dead.

I have to think that with make, model, and half a license plate the cops can find this car's owner if they want to.

exactly... like there is more than 1 silver malibu with the starting plate number as 263 in the area.. Im sure they could be found. It sucks when people do stupid things for no reason..

I owuld prolly say that they likely can't search their database accurately enough to go around accusing people. But this is one of those situations where they would probably see his car while they're out on a beat and light him up for like going 1mph over just to have probable cause in case it isn't him.

you put too much faith in the cops. they don't care.

this would have had a different outcome around here:

" at 10:00pm this evening a man was found shot on the side of the road in his car,..witnesses say that the man in the car threw something at a bicyclist, then the cyclist pulled out a 9mm handgun and emptied the clip, hitting the man in the car several times, the man in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. the cyclist is still at large."

I'd LOVE for some asswipe to try some crap like that around here.

thats probably why it never happens.

Doubtful.

I love how people that have never set foot someplace will make statements like this.

check the news asswipe:

richmond, oakland, SF, palo alto, there's ALOT of people gettin' shot every damn day.

or maybe you can't read?

the point was I have ZERO TOLERANCE for this type of behavior from motorists, and if they "play rough", so can I.

DON'T THROW ANYTHING AT A CYCLIST, you'll live longer.

Preaching to the choir Steve. Glad you're okay. By the way, if/when they find him, he'll say he wasn't behind the wheel and that's that. Sorry.

This happens all the time in traffic court with the intersection cameras that catch you running red lights. When they mail you the pic and the ticket, if you're not in it, they'll drop the ticket. *If you get caught lying though, it's big trouble.

I've been living in oakland for years now, and I have yet to see a cyclist engage in a gunfight with traffic.

So just for ****s and giggles I did a LexisNexis search and came up with just one incident in the last two years of cyclists gunning someone down, but the San Francisco Chronicle (February 26, 2008) describes it as "gang related killings" no mention of anyone throwing sodas.

There were at least three instances of people on bicycles getting shot by someone in a car or on foot (see Inside Bay Area, March 11, 2008; THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, September 27, 2006; Contra Costa Times; November 24, 2007)

I could have missed something, which you are more than welcome to post. I'll be especially interested if it mentions the people in the car assaulting the cyclist first. Anyway, thanks for keeping the streets of California safe for cyclists. I've been fortunate and the worst thing hurled at me while cycling have been a few insults. My good fortune is no doubt a result of your vigilance. Good work.

here, let me try.

i think that was less a description of what would actually happen and more of a description of a certain mindset that exists in some neighborhoods like that. the mindset is that you shouldn't **** with someone unless you're ready to deal with someone packing heat or otherwise able/ready to **** you up.

psh people would be stupid to live in milwaukee, its too damn cold! but that sucks major. there are a ton of guys that think they are tough cruising around the eastside/UWM, which is kind of surprising because there seem to be a lot of cyclists in that area. as others said, im sure the cops could find them if they really wanted but unfortunately they don't really care. they have bigger problems to deal with in MIL. maybe report it to the UWM campus police who have less stuff to deal with?

They are incredibly common on BF. Someone will post a story about some teens that flicked a booger at a cyclist. Someone eventually says that if they were that cyclist they would have gunned down the teens to teach them a lesson about booger flicking. Things then degenerate into an argument about carrying a concealed firearm on a bicycle. At some point a picture of one of those old army bikes with a gun mount will be posted.

All I know from movies is that shooting a gun from a moving platform (horse, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.) is really easy. That and that ninjas, regardless of the number, attack one at a time. So don't worry too much.

OP: The police can probably track down the creep with a partial plate number coupled with a make and model (if they are inclined to do it- a big if).
