I'll be in Houston next week on business and am staying near the Galleria. I won't be in town long enough to do any riding, but I'd like to check out any recommended shops in the neighborhood. Suggestions from the locals?

Are you talking bike shops or just "shop" shops?
There is West End Bicycles not to far from the Galleria and they do rentals according to there website if you change your mind about biking though I never had a need to rent from them but whenever I have shopped there they have been great.

Also, Bikesport is worth checking out. They're really pricey, but they do tend to know their stuff.

Thanks - I'll check out both. I may be able to squeeze in a quick ride so the rental information is appreciated.
West End has a "Taco Ride" on (30 or so miles) Sunday mornings to that I occasionally go on, part way through the ride they stop and lock everybody’s bike together and eat at a little Mexican restaurant. Leisurely paced and good cheap tex-mex food.
Go have some awesome BBQ at Luling City Market, it's on Richmond, just East of 610, North side of the street. My buddy Tom Craig runs the place.
I also remember a really good place for po' boys on Richmond. I'll know it if I see it, but it's been several years. I'll definitely check out Luling City Mkt.
I like West End for the folks and vintage wallhangers. Bikesport is boring, but Daniel Boone Cycles has got to be the coolest bike shop in town, hands down!:p
+1 for West End. Some nice vintage bikes, interesting single speeds, and everyone there is very friendly and helpful. My 3 yr old daughter even likes to go with me to see Frank the cat.
It's not hard to find with a map, but it's in a really odd location for a business, right in the middle of a neighborhood, so be sure to get turn by turn directions.
