Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - How to ruin a morning ride.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Some dried up old lady this morning insisted on blaring her horn at me and swerving into oncoming traffic everytime she came near me, even though I was in the bike lane. This happened a few times, then I zoomed past her and gave a little mirror-slap. Then, I spent the rest of my ride worried she was going to run me down if she passed me again. I hate reacting to people in this fashion. I don't like being angry, I don't like being afraid and I definitely don't like being an *******. Sigh.:(

that happened to me a couple days ago.
this guy was laying on his horn while i was riding the line between the parking and driving lanes, and as i usually do in instances like this, i just moved into the middle of his lane and kept riding. as he passed me i got the middle finger out of his sun roof, but about 3/4 of a mile down when i reached the downtown area, i gave his window a firm slap as i passed him in traffic.

Hardly anybody honks at me. I have a finger ready for that. But it never happens.

I'm glad someone else takes the lane when people are being asses. The other day I was riding down a one way and this lady backed out of a parking space right in front of me then honked and got upset when I didnt stop and just rode around the back of her car. She followed for like three blocks and I just occupied the lane. I was proud, I resisted giving her the much deserved single finger salute.
fingers are passive aggressive. a loogie to the passenger side gets the point accross much better.

getting honked at while riding in the bike lane is pretty lame. definitely hard not to get angry at that.

after a while you will probably get to the point where that type of **** doesn't even bother you very much. some people are just idiots.

I usually give em a thumb, which I think works even better.
Said thumb goes up their ass, of course.

This is my typical strategy. On my ride home there's always the same truck parked right by a no parking/bike lane sign. I make sure I have a nice loogie ready. That thing is filthy now.
*periodically an 'abandoned vehicle' sticker appears on it and the owner just swaps it out for a week or so with another beater that's normally parked on the lawn. That car's loogied up too.
puke on a lexus.
i take the lane too when someone is being a jackarse.
always carry old spark plugs.

Yeah, usually I'm unphased. Don't know why I reacted this morning. I blame it on quitting smoking. (day 5)

Do you guys think this will really make drivers more accepting of you?
This kind of stuff just adds to the hostility. Just take the lane and don't give them attention.
can't we all just live in harmony? i ride aggressively and somewhat expect to get crap from drivers, but i don't ever retaliate. i just laugh when i get the finger on my bike and i think it is shallow to have your whole day ruined by someone else's ignorance. if that was the case i would be hacking loogies at my co-worker all day long. play nice and you won't have to worry about the karma police knocking on your door.

no i don't, actually. usually i'll just take the lane and give a wave, but i was feeling sassy and figured if he's going to give me the finger i might as well return the favor.

 I love it.. I just carve into the centre of the lane and sloooow down. Every honk ... I go slower until I reach parade speeds. Looking back with the WTF hand on ear. Huh? What? ..I can't hear you over your horn.

I did this once and got pushed into a guard rail (driving a car at the time)
I usually chew gum when going into traffic so I have a easy access projectile.
If it is the big truck/suv driving a-hole that is giving me trouble, I give them my version of the middle finger:

That's why I have a water bottle cage on my fixed. So I can reach down and grab that glass bottle and fly it at the angry motorist. i'm still waiting for the day I get to do that.
My brother, father and I were riding through our subdivision taking the lane and two guys in a pickup followed us for a few seconds while yelling out the window. They then passed us very fast and close, but they didn't notice the local cop watching the whole thing from down the street. He pulled them over as they reached him, then asked us to stop and proceeded to scold these grown men like little children about how bikes have just as much right to the lane as cars. +1 for LEOs. I've had several run ins in my subdivision, lots of prepubescent teens with cars, I've smacked mirrors, as well as doors. Once I followed a guy home cause he thought it would be cool to pass me too close and clip me with his mirror. He ran inside and called his daddy to come outside, I explained the situation and daddy slapped his moron son on the back of the head. Priceless!!

Are you serious? What's that gonna do besides bounce of their window and onto the road?
gum on road + your bike = gum stretched out across your drivetrain/cog/hub </3

I flicked some dudes off for laying on the horn one time. They chased me down, but luckily I escaped to my friends house before I could get my ass beat.

I shot one through an open drivers side window once. It was right after finals last year, so all the frat guys were out gettin hammered. As I'm riding over to my friends to do the same, these two guys pull up behind me at a stop light where i'm trackstanding. They edge up really close to my back tire. Whatev, so i ride on when it turns green. Then i run the next red and a stop sign a little ways up. They eventually catch up to me flying like all hell, when they pass me they nearly run me into a parked car while the passenger moons me. I was already goin about 25, and i keep this pace as they near a four way stop. I pass 'em on the left and send a loogie straight into the drivers face. Up the sidewalk I go, dismount run across the train tracks and never see 'em again.
Drank to that all night.

If the window is down, I'm sure you don't want to have someone else's gum on your face.
A friend told me to keep ball bearings in my motorcycle jacket although it has yet to come to that.

Given that a horn means 'I am here' (at least in the UK). I just give 'em a wave and say hi.
Having said that, persistant offenders get a yelling at and general mayhem ensues.

If someone can't get down with respect, **** them. It is a pretty simple principle. I have limited respect for people driving, let alone people driving like idiots and think that they own the world. I like to let them know that they may have a car, but I'm still in control. If this means spitting, mirror slaps, taking the lane and not letting them pass, threats, or whatever it takes, then so be it. I know its not good to take on an 'Us vs Them' attitude, but I doubt getting stepped on by a dude (figuratively) in an Escalade helps either.

Fortunately, on our east side of the city, drivers aren't too aggressive.
If I'm honked at, it scares/startles me, but there isn't much I can do since they drive past me too fast.
I want to throw a rock or spark plug or something if they're being nasty, but they're long gone before I could react. I also pull further into the lane.
I worry that if I'm too much an a**hole people will take it out on other cyclists later. If they want to deal with me, okay, I'm ready.

So explain the sparkplug to me again... they break a window everytime? Why is that?
xylophonecks
03-28-08, 09:00 AM
The ceramic from a sparkplug attracts negative electrons (Negative Static) A cars side or rear window (Tempered Glass ie safety glass) has positive electrons (Positive Static) If one were to throw a peice of sparkplug ceramic at a car window the first part of the ceramic that touches the window creates a miner spark explosion which temporarly weakens the glass to an extreme point than the rest of the weight of the ceramic breaks the glass.
well how 'bout that ****.

Yeah... WTF??!?!?!?! positive electrons? I think you've got yourself Nobel prize material here. Don't talk, just go straight to the patent office so the corporate scientists don't jack your brilliance.
