Greetings,

I am a triathlete/road racer who is planning my first touring ride. I want to do the Western Express Route (SF to Pueblo CO) this summer. I ordered detailed maps from the Adventure Cycling Association. Anyone have any experience with that route? Anything to avoid/look out for/be careful of/add etc.? I am a complete rookie as far as touring goes.

Also, I know that time varies greatly with conditioning/health/mechanical problems etc., but any rough idea about how long this should take me?

I know this is all very general...but he, I'm a rookie.

Thanks in advance,

Josh

I have ridden the Western Express route from SF to Carson City. I did a journal of that ride (http://www.biketouringtips.com/bike.journals/SF2CarsonCity/index.htm). The climbing up to Carson Pass is tough and there isn't much to buy once you leave Placerville until you reach Carson City, though there are sandwich places here and there. I can't imagine biking in the Nevada desert in the summer.

Here are 3 links to information on the Western Express route (http://www.biketouringtips.com/searchTips.html?country=United%20States&state=&place=&id=Adventure%20Cycling%20Association&subtopic=22.5).
