I just picked up a '96 Specialized Hardrock GX Sport to setup as my commuter.
You can see what it will look like on Paul Dorn's web page. http://www.runmuki.com/images/bicycles/oldhardrock.gif
Paul had one setup as a commuter and I plan to do simular.
I'll post photos of my bike as soon as I can get a decent shot.

Hi mtessmer! Yep, I plan to ride all winter. That is one reason I had to purchase this bike. My MTB is FS and the LBS does not recommend riding it in the extreme cold. I guess its hard on the seals etc. And the roadie tires just won't cut it in the ice and snow. I had to order a part for the seat that was missing and as soon as it comes in, I'll be out there in da'snow.

Here is a close photo of how the bike will look when it is configured. My bike is green, however. Photo used with permission from Paul. Thanks Paul!

Here is a photo of my new commuter bike. I have logged only around 25 miles on it. I am sorry to say that it is not going to work out. The frame size is just a tad on the small side for me. Looks like I'll be stripping it down and it will go to one of the kids. :(

So, looking for another commuter bike.

Hey Andy! I don't think your nuts! Snow riding is a real BLAST! :D The only real drag is when you HAVE to do it! As a rule, I really try to make it fun even then. :p

You can read an accouting of my ride last Friday in the following thread:

Come on up! It will be an experience you can tell all the guys back home about.

... ride in the snow!!!

Only on Mtb, I really don't have the desire to commute in the stuff.
(Although we don't get that stuff in the valley's of SoCal anywho)

Here's a strange picture I took yesterday of my new 'puter:

.

You'll need to do frequent washing and oiling. as in every week. My LBS just told me to stop washingthe bike with detergent. It's wreckng the bearings in the stem and now water is getting inside.

Its not nuts! My favorite rides ever have been in the snow. Once at night during a first snow fall along the River Road that follows the Mississippi, and again at night on hard snowpack on Frozen Lake Calhoun. Third place, however was Fairfax to the top of Mt Tam, to where I could look over Stinson Beach to the expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

Come take a winter vacation out here, I'll set you up for some real good biking!
