I surprized you didn't mention the under the seat kits that some of us use. Or the non-duct taped frames. Or matched wheel sets. Or track rear ends when a little lock-tite would do the trick.

Geez. I'll keep my front brake, thanks. I like redundant systems, especially the ones that can save my life... and as to the drop bars, you try finding french bars in a different shape.

I don't care much what your ride looks like, as long as it's safe and you ride it. I just fixed up an old moto mixte for a young lady, it's completely uncool, but it's great-- because she rides it.

Be careful with your assumption. I don't have pet peeves about people because of their bikes....I have pet peeves about the bicycles themselves.

So, petpeeve the bike, pet peeve the owner.. in most cases.

So about 20 miles a trip. That's a little far to go without any water. Where do you keep your water?
Where do you keep your spare tires?

For me it is easier to keep that stuff on the bike. If I don't keep all that stuff on my bike I will forget it.
I don't really park my bike outside either. If I did that I would probably not leave the stuff on the bike.

man, the original poster would -hate- my old fixie. it's some wretched old nishiki frame, spraypainted a variety of greens and blues. flat bars, bmx lever running to an old mafac racer brake, and the FULL METAL BASKET (you know, that big nasty wald one).

it's a great loaner bike - nobody wants to be seen on it.

Because I'm an angsty GenX dropout, naturally I don't care how people outfit their fixies or singlespeeds. Except those that have all titanium ones, or off the shelf ones, or Surlys, or ones without Brookes saddles, or ride without wearing a 1970's wool jersey. But hey, thats just me okay? How do you feel about The Stiff Little Fingers or The Descendants? Prefer Creed? F**k you buddy! Here's my top 10 -

1) Steel tubing manufacturers not providing me or anyone for that matter with tech drawings of their S-Bend chainstays. *******s!
2) People who drive their SUVs to the soccer matches. Or anywhere for that matter. Okay, so you have a small penis, take it out on someone else.
3) The Guv'ment. All of them. Especially George Bush, Tony Blair, and John Howard. Where is our humanity gone?
4) People
5) Red, blue or yellow powdercoat. If I ever meet Paul Turner again I'll punch him in the face. Then again, his mum is an Aussie so I might forgive him.
6) Extreeem Gromits. No, Kona is not cool, and no you can't turn my favourite singletrack into something resembling the surface of the moon.
7) Logging companies. Nestle. Nike. Coca-Cola. McDonalds. Rio Tinto. Go die you fascist bastards.
8) Terms such as 'Economic Rationalism', 'ROI' and, and......grrrrrrrr.
9) PCs.
10) Your bike.

I should probably add courier bags in there somewhere too. Not only because it will be fun watching people get all sh!tty about it, but also because they suck bigtime. I mean, my left shoulder is already lower due to years of schoolbag abuse, why would I want to exacerbate the problem? But anyway, when I want to look Courier Chic, I don my Systeme U/Raleigh jersey and swing my Crumpler courier bag over my shoulder. Custom, of course.

Hmm... given that the primary purpose of a bicycle is transportation, not entertainment, and given further that it is often necessary to get from point A to point B even when it happens to be raining, fenders just plain make sense. Personally, frames without fender clearance and fender and rack eyelets are a "peeve" for me.

Also, ONE of the benefits to a fixed gear is low maintenence and less to be damaged by foul weather. Therefore, If I had a multi-geared road bike and a fixed gear single speed both standing by while it was ranining, which bike do you think I would be more likely to take? Therefore, having fenders on a fixed gear just makes damn good sense doesn't it.

As for brakes, I'll lug around the extra whole ounce. I don't want to be without brakes, and I don't want anyone coming down a hill that I am riding, walking, or driving on without brakes either. If they can pull it off without getting killed, great! I'd just rather they not try it around me.

Other "peeves" :

1) I can't buy cotton bar tape around here (Had to order online).

2) Same with plugs.... and 700x23 or 700x20 tires.

3) Of the two LBSs, neither one has a single road bike.

4) People who ride on sidewalks.

5) People who ride on the wrong side of the road.

6) People who run lights.

7) Cars horns, even when it is supposed to be a hello.

8) Lowered cars.

9) Loud car stereos.

10) Loud exhaust systems.

What's wrong with lowered cars?

1) They aren't practical. I've seen quite a few scrape (OR GET STUCK!) on speed bumps.

2) They usually have loud exhaust systems and loud stereos cranking out a very unpleasant form of "music", Usually something that sounds like a pissed off auctioneer spewing out profanities and nonsense in rhythm while someone's boots are tossed around in a clothes dryer.

3) The drivers are obnoxious kids who all speak some sub-english language that is impossible to understand and offensive to have to listen to: "you be", "they is", "it be", "yo dog", "Dis Be My G Car", "Yo Yo Yo".

4) Said drivers sometimes get out of the cars... then you have to see them walking around with their pants haning halfway off their butts. [Someone PLEASE explain that!!!! I've even seen the pants hanging off when the person has a belt on.]

5) They are an eye sore. [both the drivers and the cars].

6) Lowered pickup trucks. Look ma, I've got 10 extra feet of car, only get 14 miles per gallon, and since I lowered it I can't haul a damn thing so the bed might as well not be there at all!

7) The drivers all seem to think they are auditioning for the movie the fast and the stupid.

8) A Honda Civic is NOT a hot rod. Give Up!

9) Those huge exhaust tips. Trust me, a tip 8 inches across on the end of a 2 inch wide exhaust pipe will NOT reduce the back pressure to the engine.

10) Most of the drivers seem to have their seats practically in a reclined position so that they have to stretch out their arm (not arms) to reach the wheel. This is not safe. You can barely see their heads above the window ledge which means that they can't see a whole lot either.

11) The stress of constantly having to keep myself from yelling "SIT UP" "PULL YOUR PANTS UP" "TURN THAT DAMN HAT AROUND THE RIGHT WAY" "SPEAK ENGLISH" "TURN THAT NOISE OFF" "FIX YOUR CAR" "WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS!? WHO IS YOUR PROBATION OFFICER?!" "TIE YOUR SHOES".

Of course these are just my opinions. That was the whole point. I was replying to the original poster's "pet peeves".

#3) I have not encountered the kind of abuse to the English language that I was referring to here. I will admit, however, that I do not read the BMX forum [as was suggested by another poster]. Also, it may simply be the case that people who abuse the langauge verbally are better able to edit what they write.

#2) Yes, my music vs theirs. And if MY music were loud enough that they had no choise but to listen to it, then they would have every right to criticize it as they saw fit. However, since I am not that rude, they are not forced to listen to my radio. Since I am not only forced to HEAR, but also to FEEL their music, I have every right to criticize their selections.

At all hours of day and night SUVs with chrome rims and neon lights and little clown cars riding two inches off the road (Often with spoilers higher than the roof!) drive up and down my street. My living room windows actually rattle from the base notes. Car alarms are frequently set off by the vibrations. If I am not wearing shoes, I can feel the vibrations in the floor. I can't call these sounds music because there is no more of a melody line than there is to an auctioneer's pitch. If you tried humming or whisteling one of these "songs" it would sound like morse code. By definition, this is not music. A spoken word piece with sound effects? Maybe. But not music.

The lyrics to these songs are amazingly rude themselves. If I weren't FORCED to listen, I wouldn't care. Since I have no choice in the matter, I object strongly. Every third or fourth word seems to be obscene and every sentence that I am able to understand [which are thankfuly rare] are likewise obscene. The other day I heard one blasting the line "nuts on yo chin... nuts on yo chin" over and over again. At first I had no idea what they were saying, but I realized what it was because it kept repeating, and a little later I realized what it actually meant and was disgusted. I couldn't make out what was said in the lines in between. A lot of times I can't understand most of what they say, but it is still clear that the word "B!+cH" is used constantly.

So yes, My music vs theirs. And as long as they are forcing ME to listen to THEIR "music", [And no, It isn't music] then I have every right to criticize the tasteless, obscene, talentless, disgusting noise that they have chosen to force me to listen to.

about the 'civics' breaking 11sec barrier. civic is in quotes bc those cars are so far removed from being a civic. different motors, gutted interiors, carbon fiber everything, lexan windows, special wheelie bars to hold the front end on the ground, the list continues. the cars are far from street legal. for HALF the money they spent on modifications alone, one could go out and buy any old american v8, modify it, and b*tch slap the h*ll outta those pesky civics and such!
i know this bc i used to be into that sort of ricey stuff. but i sold my lowered, modified, loud, BUT FUN, 91 CRX si. i bought an 88 nissan sentra for $700 which has remained bone stock, and nearly undriven, and is uninsured rotting in my parents driveway!

i appologize for further encouraging the off-topic-ness of this thread, but i have to put my 2 cents in...if you don't want to read what i have to say, don't read it. i won't do this again, i swear.

attn: stevenaleech

loud car stereos annoy the piss out of me too, and i can't seem to grasp why anyone would want to subject themselves to the extreme SPLs present inside the vehicles...

a lot of composition and other work goes into making a good hip hop song. just because a song has sampled elements, doesn't make it original. and doesn't make it unmusical.

just because the lyrics of a song aren't sung, doesn't mean that the song itself isn't musical.

arranging samples and processing everything so that it sounds smooth is an art. i happened to go to school for four years to learn how to do it. i've spent 6 hours+ working on a multi-track, -1 minute project, getting it to sound JUST right. this stuff that people say isn't music is someone's art, someone's life. and you know what, they probably don't give two sh*ts what anyone else thinks about it.

just because something isn't palatable is no reason to devalue it's cultural or artistic significance.

btw, i'm not a hip hop producer or afficianado or anything like that, i'm a sound artist. i appreciate the work that goes into making those tracks.
