General Cycling Discussion - What's a good overall cycling magazine?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When I go to the local magazine shop there is a wide range of bicycle magazines I see there, but I dunno which one is good enough to subscribe to.

Does anyone know a good cycling magazine that does not focus only on mountain biking (like most I have seen)? Something that has good articles about tranining and technique, product reviews and other stuff for road biking?

Amir,
It's hard to find a really good commercial bicycle magazine. (If you ever read Calvin 'n Hobbes, Bill Watterson said that the really absurd chewing gum magazines that Calvin reads are parodies of bicycling magazines.)

I prefer bike zines over commercial bike magazines. (My favorite bike zine is one called 'leapfrog.') A good bike zine can be a nice treat, because they can focus on the reader rather than the advertisers. Unfortunately, I don't know any bike zines devoted to road biking.

Here in the Netherlands, English language publications are somewhat difficult to come by.

I like Procycling, and subscribe to it and Bicycling. The latter is more general, but a little too hip, rad, and noughts for my taste.

I also get Fiets, which is a more general Dutch magazine, but since I don't speak the language well, I mostly look at the pictures. ;)

The Web is also a great source of information of almost any kind.

Cheers...Gary

Personally, I rarely read bicycle magazines. I prefer oldroads.com, bkeforums.com, and schwinn.com, because I can obtain answers to specific questions.

Of the UK magazines, I quite like "Cycling Plus", I find apart from "What mountain Bike" the Mountain Bike magazines cater too much to the 14yr old with raging hormones and acne.

I guess this confirms my fears that periodical bike mags aren't a good source for up to date cycling information...

There was this very well polished cycling magazine I saw a while ago, they had a dozen page guide to "how to get bicycle legs like the pros" ... which had specific workouts that supposedly bring out the "tone" in the legs and make them look more "pro".

well, I'm certainly not a pro nor an expert, but isn't riding on your bike the best way to get a well toned cycling lower body? And could somebody tell me how a better looking pair of legs suppose to help cycling performance?

I subscribe to Velonews for the race coverage and features... and I occasionally buy Cycle Sport for the Graham Watson photography. Nevertheless, I don't think there's a really adequate bicycle-tech-and-products magazine out there. The market is both too broad -- roadies, freeriders and landriders are far too disparate a market to be easily targetted -- and too narrow -- how many serious roadies ARE there out there anyway, and how many would subscribe to my magazine? -- to interest most mass market magazine publishers in North America. On the other hand, if you look hard enough, you can find some pretty good race-oriented pubs from Europe and a number of not-bad product sites on the Net.

HAving said that, you will see SOME product information in the race-oriented pubs from time-to-time, though it may not be in the detail you seek.

Could you share some of the good cycling product websites you may have found?

I have searched high and low for a site with some good general and up to date product reviews and guides, but no luck.

This may have what some of you want. It is a zipped file of my cycling bookmarks. I add some almost daily, but this should be a start.

Too right!

Cycling Plus is a good mix of biking interest with good product tests.

Many thanks, Gary.

That's one complete set of bookmarks!
