Foo - I asked this question once in P&R (For the techies amongst us :p)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yep, I'm curious as to the response here :D
Simple questions, really......
If the technology actually existed on the free market to directly access the internet and all with a hardware implant direct to the brain, would you:
Have it installed
What OS would you use?
As I said, I'm just curious
You can also select more than one answer in the poll.

Funny that I was thinking about something like this the other day.
There will probably come a point where we could have cell phone technology (not "cell phones" specifically as we know them but the technology that lets us communicate) implanted or "wired" into our brains and other sensory organs.
And would I want to be wired in any sense?
Absolutely not.

On a Microsoft brain-OS, they'd soon figure out how to stream pop-up advertising straight into your brain.
But if forced, I'd choose Mac OS X - - that way my Brain would be less likely to crash.

I have enough problems staying focused, if I had updates coming into my brain twice a day it would be hopeless. Besides think of what all of the hackers could do, all of your personal information is stored there!
Reminds me of a book we had to read our freshman year called Feed (http://www.amazon.com/Feed-M-T-Anderson/dp/0763622591). Pretty much the dumbest book ever.
As for the poll, the only part of the internet I would want in my brain is Wikipedia.
Coming soon to wet-ware near you...
Mmmm, snowcrash!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Crash - ALWAYS take wiki-let's make crap up-pedia with a massive pinch of salt

Wired? Never.
But, I am looking forward to when cel phones are smaller than a bluetooth ear piece, and 100% voice activated.

I like the idea of having instant access to information but a wired brain me thinks is not such a great idea. I'd at least want a switch so I could turn it off. And Linux OS would be my choice, that way when I have a problem I can consult with millions of people around the world rather then the corporate help desk.
1. Probably not, too much SPAM.
2. If I did it would be Linux/Unix. Just had a Linux server pass 1400 days of uptime.

Are we talking something like a cyberbrain a la Ghost in the Shell? The hecks yes i would. Of course, only if the proper encryption/firewalls/barriers were avaliable in place.
Even now, sometimes i wish i really could have a small hard drive implated to store data or images on the fly (y'know, so i won't have to keep that Oregon Scientific action camera mounted to my bicycle handlebars). :D

Heck no.
Maybe after they work out the bugs 20 years from when it was released.
I would hate to see a BSOD.
Now if it worked perfectly that would be a different story.

I always think of jonny nmeumonic haha
I am afraid I would end up like Keanu Reeves, either in real life or in Johnny Nemonic.

Man, you know you'll be laughing when they get you, no matter what.
No thanks. But if I had to do it, I'd probably want to run QNX.

Just don't try to pack in more data than your wetware can handle. ;)

no, I would not get implanted with the internet, however, a USB port for a thumb drive, YES!!!

You want something to stick your thumb into? Is this like a high tech version of sucking one's thumb?

Dude...then you'd be bogus too...
Umm, yeah...I'd get wired. It'd be a great excuse for drifting off in a conversation.
"Huh? Oh, I was just browsing Foo...what were you saying?"

Well I wouldn't get it installed to begin with. If it was linux inside, I probably find myself in a dependency loop and the server is down.
Implants, no way.
1: Ad companies would love to use it.
2: More ways people can track people en masse, perhaps weed out the potential dissidents or undesirables.
3: Likely easily hacked, and I wouldn't put it past someone to try to short out people's implants.
4: An EMP blast would make life hell.
5: Walking near a radar dish would cause the implant to arc.
6: I have enough holes in my head as it is.
7: I dread if the battery starts leaking.
Sunglasses and a Bluetooth headset is as far as I will go.
