I just purchased a new bicycle that has coaster brakes. They squeal whenever applying the brakes and it's very annoying to me and everyone outside within earshot.

I did a search on google and didn't find much of anything on coaster brakes. Definately nothing about squealing. Anyone seen/heard this before?

new to you or new, new? If you just got it from a shop take it back and have them take care of it. If it is used sounds like the drum/shoes are dry. You would need to take it apart, clean the old grease out, grease it up and put it back together. You can do it your self, but, if you have never taken apart a coaster hub then you either want to take it to a shop or pay REALLY close attention to how it comes apart so you can stick it back together. It is easiest to take it apart from the cog side and you will have to unthread the acuator out of the clutch to get it apart, one piece comes out of one side the other out of the other side. Use a lot of grease to stick the shoes in place long enough to get it back together.

I'm just going to second what the REV said. There's no earthly reason for a coaster brake to squeal unless it is without grease. You should take it back.

It should be warrnetied by your LBS, or your applying the brakes too hard and skidding the tire.

it's definately not skidding the tire because it happens even at light pressure but the more pressure the louder the squeal. It's a bike from bikedesigner.com. I got it online since the LBS doesn't sell something like that but you're right, probably too big of a job for me to tackle so I'll take it there.
