There are lots of places to buy gear and tents, I'm curious why the specific North Face question, and which tents are you looking at in particular? Can you throw us some links?

I've purchased most of my equipment from REI. I've found customer service amazing, and if you shop a little bit their prices can be really good. You want to compare the size and weight of tents if you want to take them touring/hiking/etc because you gotta lug it around! I personally prefer a tent that is one size bigger than I need. I find when I'm out hiking or traveling the extra space is great. Plus, when a company says that a tent is for one person they really mean ONE PERSON and not much else. When I bought my most recent tent I got a "3 person tent" that comfortably fits me and my girlfriend. Another person could physically fit, but it would be super duper cozy...if you know what I mean.

Check out their website...it is easy to navigate. I would start in the "lightweight tent" section, and probably the two person. That way you have room for yourself and your panniers.

If you are looking to save a bit more money (this is where I shop), the outlet has even better deals. If you live close to an REI store they will ship it there for free! Here are some tents:

Depending on where you are, there are many stores and places to buy - I am quite pleased with REI. Lots of others on this forum talk about MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) as a great store as well. As for the stove, I just bought my first real camping stove for my upcoming tour... so I'm new to it myself. Here is a link to an old thread about camp stoves, though. It's a good place to start.

As always, search the Touring forums for old posts. Inevtiably people have discussed the topic before; that's how I usually begin my research.

Happy shopping!
