My wife has always demanded,on a vacation you can only one set of toys...Scuba or biking..
Moorea should be paradise for me... As I read the island has few cars.. Many get around on bicycle. Searches find no bike tour companies. Think the island has like a 35 mile road following the coast.
My wife got a great deal for Thanksgiving week.We are going. Paradise...Biking and scuba.. My wife got fed up, setting about all summer recovering from my shoulder surgery, which I am still not fully recovered. She demanded, no vacation all summer.. I am going to Moorea, are you going.?..... I am going..
Anyone ever been there. What kind of biking is there on Moorea.(Tahiti chain) Wish I could find a bike rental shop on Moorea. Contacted our hotel.. No response.E mail system seems down..... Guess could bring a rental bike back on ferry from Pappette.
Anyone been there..? . What kind of bike should I rent. Could bring my hybrid over on the plane.. I am taking a minimum or dive gear...If you know the island, would you bring a mountain, hybrid,or road bike...? Is biking any good there.?

I am not surprized that you did not receive a response from the Hotel. I have been to Tahiti 4 times. And I am always annoyed at the lack of service, and their attitude reflects the French influence. I go there only because I have to, to get where I really think is paradise. Either the Cook Islands or Tonga.

At any rate Morea is more laid back than the main Island, which you could take a ferrie over too if you got bored. I would take a mountain bike as there are many side roads to exsplore that are dirt.

Gotta check out my airlines and see how penalized I will be for lugging a bike on Air Tahiti Nui..Would rather take my hybrid over rent a bike.. Like to find out if my hotel has bikes..Usually not to my liking. The island is so quiet probably excellant riding? Wonder how rugid it is to rid to the top of the volcanno.

I would not bring your bike. My wife and I visited the Cook Islands last year. We went to 2 different islands. I am not sure how Moorea compares with Rarotonga or Aitutaki, but things are different down there in paradise. Aitutaki is the second most popular island of the Cook's and less than half the roads are paved.

It is also very likely there will be a strict limit on weight on the puddle jumper to Moorea.

What has bothered me is a failure to get in touch with any business or hotel on Moorea to find out who rents bikes.
From what I have read, the island's major road is paved and not many people live there. I have seen references to biking being a major means of getting about.
If I can't get it from my hotel or any nearby business , I will bring one back on the boat from Pappette.

Made my decision..The dive shop I will use offers dive gear at no cost.
The airline considers bikes regular luggage at no extra cost as long as your total weight is not exceeded. I usually demand only using my own gear(dive.)
So my hybrid is going with me... Hope I can climb to the top of Mt. Totui.
I get to put a Tahitian flag on my hybrid..Talked to a fellow cyclist who has traveled the world and has been to Moorea..Says the coastal road is flat. And bays are beautiful... Biking the 60 Km. about Moorea is to be in my bike log.
Think Thanksgiving Day, I need work up an appetite...I will be taking lots of pictures. Above the water line and below.
