I was cruising about 22-23 mph pounding the pedals pretty hard when suddenly my right foot started wobbling and next thing I knew, my pedal was gone! I lost control, veered off the trail into the grass, got sideways, racked my naughty bits (thank you Specialized for a sloping top tube which minimized the impact to the twins) and finally came to a stop. I unclipped my other foot and looked back to find my pedal. I thought the spindal broke. Oddly enough, the pedal was still stuck to the bottom of my shoe. Somehow, the pedal (LOOK Carbon CX-6) came unscrewed. All the little parts inside the pedal were gone and there was a crack where the threads are. I got a new pair to put back on, but I'm a little wary. Anyone else have this happen ever?

Not personally. Have you looked on roadbikereview or something similar to see if anyone else has had this problem? From what you're saying about the pedal, I'm having a hard time seeing what was missing and where it was cracked, (hazard of being very visual in nature).

Was it the left one? if you go to roadbikereview.com there are several posts regarding the PP396 and the spindle either shearing off, or the pedal simply falling off. It's an obvious QC issue, but this is the first time I heard this regarding the CX-6. Perhaps they use the same spindle? the PP396 used to sell for around $200.00

You will notice that most of the big retailers, Performance, excel, nashbar, etc..... have lowered the price on these to 95.00 or so. I imagine this is pretty close to thier cost, and I think if they are dumping them due to QC issues, they should let the consumer know.......

LOOK is obviously aware of the problem, I'd call them and see what they say.

Wow, I think this is my first post that isn't about doping.......

just kidding.....

Did you see that Rumsas was just aquitted in France, despite the fact that his wife had 35 types of drugs in her trunk, including EPO, Human growth Hormone, Corticosteroids, Insulin based recovery agents, etc.. She said they were for her sick Mother. She was caught on the last day of the tour in 2002. Rumsas finished 3rd that year, despite never testing positive. A little less than a year later, he tested positive for EPO at the Giro....and was suspended for 1 year. He was not having that great of a Giro, despite the Doping... one can only imagine what he was on during the Tour.

itschris,

A similar thing happened to me last Friday. Fortunately, I wasn't pedaling hard so I just rolled to a stop. The right-hand pedal unscrewed itself from the spindle. These are OLD Look Carbo Pros that I have on my commuter bike. I screwed the pedal back on to finger tightness. There was a gas station just up the street and I borrowed a wrench and got it tightened up. I still need to clean up the threads and put some Loctite on so it doesn't happen again.

To make matters worse, about a mile up the road my left pedal started to act funny. I first thought that my cleat was coming loose. When I stopped to check it out, I discovered that my crank arm had worked itself loose. I had to one-legged pedal back to the service station and borrow ANOTHER wrench and tighten that up, too. Hopefully, I didn't damage the cranks in the process. At that point, I figured it was time to cut my ride short and head back home. I stopped by the LBS and had the mechanic check it out before riding the rest of the way home.

Yep, duck-taping your feet to the cranks has got to be the way to go ;)

I prefer to just drive a spindle into my foot and screw it in the crank. Anything else and you're just not fully committed.

I once snapped one of my Time ATACs in a very similar fashion. Scary stuff huh?

I'm pretty paranoid now, that's for sure. I went for a quick ride at lunch today to tune for my race this weekend... i"m definately wary. Everytime my foot moves I find myself looking down. My LBS was sending them back to LOOK to see what the problem may have been. Interesting side note - I'm glad I paid the extra $20 for them at my LBS instead of the internet. I'd be without pedals right now.
