Does anybody know if you have to check in at 6am and start at 6:30am to do the 100 mile? Or would they still check you in and send you off for the 100 mile around, say, 7:30am?

I was pretty happy with my route last year, i signed up for the 100Mile but ended up at about 72 miles because once we got back down kings mtn road and into woodside, instead of doing the alpine/stanford loop I just headed back up canada to Bay meadows. Didn't bonk out, got in a reasonable time, and still got to see the pretty Pescadero/Tunitas side of the route (the real reason for going IMO). I plan on doing the same thing this time around. Still gotta ride to work on Monday after all :)

I wish Giro would publish routes :( Haven't decided on this one yet.

My wife and I plan to ride the 30K EZ with our 6.75 year old son so I emailed the race director to ask about the 30K EZ route (road closures, road marshals, etc.). He provided the following info about the routes:

Here is a brief descrption of the routes and the 30KEZ (there are no road closures because it goes along the bay on a trail)

All routes start at Bay Meadows in San Mateo.

30KEZ - Ride along the San Francisco Bay to Foster City (most of the ride is on a trail) and the Sea Cloud Park Rest Stop.

All but the 30KEZ Bay Route ride up to the Sawyer Camp trail, then follow the Crystal Springs reservoir south to Edgewood Rd:

35 K: Load up on carbs at the Edgewood Rest Stop, U-turn and return to Bay Meadows.

70 K: Continue south, follow the scenic "Loop" through Portola Valley. Rest and refresh at the Portola Valley Fire Department. Follow Alpine Rd to the edge of the Stanford campus (golf course) and start to work your way back north. Climb Sand Hill road, and turn north on Whiskey Hill and Canada Road will take you towards Bay Meadows.

100 K: Continue South through Portola Valley, Arastradero Road will wind you into Palo Alto where you will climb a couple miles up Page Mill Road. Use Altamont Rd to descend towards Foothill College. Please use slow speed on Altamont descent. You will stop at St Williams Church rest stop in Los Altos for more goodies. From there you will work your way back through Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Woodside and San Mateo to Bay Meadows.

100 Mile: Continue south to Woodside, climb Woodside Road (Hwy 84) to Skyline Blvd., drop down the west side (Hwy 84) to San Gregorio. load up on carbs and drinks at the San Gregorio rest stop, then begin your ascent back to Skyline via Tunitas Creek Rd. Descend the east side (Kings Mountain Rd) back into Woodside, pick up the 100 K course as they head south through Portola Valley, Palo Alto and Los Altos. Once you've regrouped and refreshed at the St William's Church rest stop begin your trek back to Bay Meadows.

it starts at 6:00pm. start at 6:30 is not a mandatory thing. there's no whistle or anything like that.
the idea is that those who ride 100 mi will finish around the same time as the those who ride 100 km and 70 km and we all have lunch.

Yes, 100-miler for me. I need to start early, so 6:30 would be ideal. I'll be kinda slow, so I am fully expecting to be caught up even if I start at 6:00.

Damn, I'd wanted to do this ride, but at the moment, I haven't ridden my road bike in a week or two (been commuting on the fixed gear), it's getting a bit disrepair-y, and I haven't done much in the way of a long ride in a while.

Also, the thought of leaving the house at 4am or so to get there by 6-ish kind of sucks.

Hmm.

I thought I remembered a post where somebody in the south bay was asking for a carpool ride up, but I can't find it now. If this was you, let me know -- I have room in the car & an extra bike rack.

Really psyched for this ride. I am 'peaking' today with 65 miles including a climb up pagemill+moody then rest/recovery for the remainder of the week. Tunitas should be good fun :D

I figure there are 3 places I really want to be riding in a slipstream - the flat part of 84, heading north on Foothill, and heading north on Canada. Last year, the headwinds were picking up as I was heading up Canada at about mile 85, so I shamelessly wheelsucked behind a club from the East Bay someplace.

My friend and I will be in but most likely for the 70k ride as it's his first long ride and I'm having my usual cramping issues after 35 miles still...

Does anyone know if there will typically be a lot of climbing on the 70k route? Like I said earlier my buddy hasn't done a lot of riding so I don't want him to hate cycling and never ride again! I already lost Andy (Necro632) to his preggo-soon-to-burst wife so I'm trying to break in my other buddy. hehe!

Thanks!

Hey Eric! Welcome to the NorCal board! Eric is new to cycling but has been very enthusiastic about it. So wish him luck on his first long ride at the Giro on the 70k ride with me. While you're at it... wish me luck too! I usually cramp after 35 miles! UGH!!

Hey Gee3, I'll probably join you and Eric on the 70K. I was looking for someone on the list that was doing it but didn't see one. I've been out of town for weeks so I definitely can't handle 100 miles and definitely not those hills right now. Actually this will be my first BF ride.
