Got the bug while shopping for a bike for my wife. Got her a Giant Cypress, added baby seat. In the fall, she'll commute from the Slope to Carrol Gardens where she teaches with two of my boys.

I started commuting to Manhattan on an old Peugeot U.S. Express (late 1980s?). Changed the tires on it to slicks, added fenders for the rain, have been riding two-three times per week. The usual route is up 3rd Street, down Clinton to the Brooklyn Bridge (always brings a smile to my face), across Reade Street to the West Side Highway then up to 24th or 26th Street depending on my mood. Final destination is 26th St between 6th and 7th Avenues. Commute home is the reverse only take Warrne Street east instead of Reade St. It's about 7 miles each way and I'm doing it in 40 or so minutes. And I love screaming at the tourists on the bridge.

I'm planning to build a bike over the winter. Not sure what it'll be yet. Might hack something I buy on Craig's into a fixed. Or might build a road bike (I ride one in the Adirondacks when I'm up there). Would love to hear from others in the borough who build or are building.
