I, uh, kinda live in Brooklyn, but spend most of my time in Manhattan. I ride a wicked fast Look 595, and work in a tiny nook inside this massive sporting goods store that goes by the name Paragon Sports.

My Look-

I also have an old steel Raleigh sport cruiser thingamajig in my paint booth receiving a new coat, and once finished I intend to commute the 14 miles from Marine Park to Union Square on it. I already know that this is going to suck as the frame and cottered crank alone weighs about 11 pounds!

How'd you guess I lived in Brooklyn!?!?

Looking forward to 5 Borough. I'm going to start from 57th Street this year. No sense starting in Battery Park LOL!

For instance, these 2 5 Borough Bike Tour pictures are above Chambers Street 1 hour apart:

1 hour later:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v467/BumbleFish/5boro_Start01.jpg

I rode this bike and finished at 1pm. It looks the same today but with Freddy Fenders, and new tires.

If it rains I'll ride this commuter bike again (1995 Rockhopper). If the weather is nice, I'll ride my road bike.

Anyone up for meeting at Columbus Circle at 7.30am? Might be fun to meet Mr Air, finally.

Svloid, you live next door to me! I live by Clinton and Kane. No racks on your bikes!? This ain't Kansas! Bikes should be USEFUL in Brooklyn! Not mere hobby! What kind of hooks do you hang your bikes from the ceiling with!? ;) I suspect you might be a bike psycho! From your photos, I suspect your pasta is done, the tea is steeping, and you needed a new garbage bag and another roach motel and few more cleaned logo water bottles!

And xdrmusclex (http://www.bikeforums.net/member.php?u=76786), You can't b e slower than me. We should ride the Park together some weekend. Maybe the 12 or 13 of April if you're game. PM me. 4 or 5 laps?

Zacster looks too hardcore for me! Then again, everyone looks too hardcore for my fred self.

Hi All,

I'm moving to Brooklyn in June. will Post my bike when I get pictures. I'm moving from CT where i had open country roads, I'm kinda nervous that an hour work out will take 2 hours with stopping and going. Can anyone relieve my fears that Brooklyn is not a bad place to bike and I can find some decent biking.

I ride a Giant OCR-2

I'm new to this forums and new to serious biking. I live in the Gravesend area, far down in Brooklyn, a stop away from Coney Island on the N train. I recently got a Trek 7.3 at a newly open LBS around my neighborhood. I'm short and a little over weight I think its time to fix that lolz. My brother and I signed up for the 5 boro bike tour I just hope we can handle it. =D

Welcome onesix. I too am in the gravesend area. I am by the Gravesend Neck Road station on the "Q" train. We should get together and ride some time. I will be doing the 5 boro also and will be starting at 32nd street and 6th avenue. I will be with my G/F who is a new rider, so I will be hanging back with her. If you are interested in hooking up, either to ride around the neighborhood or to do the 5 boro, let me know.

Don't laugh but today was the first time I took advantage of Prospect Park's bike loop. All I can say is WOW. It's fast and easy enough for non-serious riders like myself. Did 8 laps felt great and went home. Didn't even think about crossing a bridge to hit Central Park!

is there an easy route from brooklyn up toward central park, or any decent little to no cars (ie no stoping at a million red lights) 30 mile loop

Here's a routine loop from Sunset Park that I ride pretty often. Probably not the smartest, but it's entertaining enough that I keep going back.

3rd Ave during non-rush hours is relatively pleasant (just repaved, nice and smooooth). Returning on 7th into Broadway gets a little nasty so you can go down 5th, which is pretty nice once you pass the midtown area. (Brooklyn) 5th Ave around Greenwood Cemetery gets dicey since they're doing construction - hopefully to repave, the road is horrible. I hate riding on it, but I'm not too keen on 4th Ave's speeding Brooklyn motorists.

Ooooor, you can just hop on over to Prospect Park and do the loop 9 times. Minimal traffic, and just some joggers and skaters to ride around. Of course you don't go anywhere after all that pedaling... :p

My daily commute takes me from Park Slope to the Upper West Side and back (22 mi RT). My favorite route is mostly on-street bike lanes (marked) and the Hudson River Greenway (separate from highway traffic).

West on 9th Street (bike lane), north on 5th Ave (bike lane), west on Bergen St (bike lane), south (backtracking, yes, but just two blocks) on Court St, west on Warren St, North on Clinton St (bike lane). Alternately, take 9th Street all the way to Smith St, then north on Smith to 2nd Place, west on 2nd Place, north on Clinton. Clinton St curves to the right to cross Cadman Plaza West and join Tillary St down the hill to the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. In case you've never been on the Brooklyn Bridge before you'll be riding on the center roadway with the pedestrians. Once you leave the bridge on the Manhattan side merge with traffic on Centre St and take the first left onto Chambers St (no lane). Stay on Chambers for five blocks, cross West Street, and turn north onto the Hudson River Greenway. No motor traffic, save for the occasional Park Service vehicle, but be aware of traffic crossing the bike path. And, of course, look out for those pesky joggers and the NYPD Mountie roadapples.

This may seem like a long way around to Central Park, but it really isn't, and if you're like me you look for ways to make your ride longer, not shorter. You could go up the east side, using the bike path along the FDR, but it's not a complete route--you must use streets more--and depending on how far north you go you'll eventually need to carry your bike over stairs and other obstacles. The Hudson River Greenway is a terrific path; It'll be even better when the parallel pedestrian malls are finished.

Visit your LBS and pick up a free NYC Cycling map. It shows all the bike lanes, bike paths, and bridge crossings.

Cool! You're near me. I'm on 4th ave, so taking 5th ave is kinda out of the way. I go west on 9th st to Clinton and take that all the way up to Cadman. Clinton St is such a beautiful route in the mornings :)

After switching back and forth between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, I've settled on the Manhattan. I skirt up Chrystie to Houston, Houston to Lafayette, Lafayette to 9th st, 9th st to 6th ave and 6th Ave to 49th st.

I'll have to get my butt up early one of these days and enjoy the Hudson River Greenway. ;)

My last post was intended for you, brsboarder, and I just checked your first post in this thread to discover that you're not yet a NY'er. I'll mail a NYC Cycling Map to you if you'd like; PM me, I guess, though I'm new to BF and don't know how that works. Suppose I'll find out...

Anyway, there are enough long stretches of auto-less bike paths that you don't really need the loops in Prospect or Central Parks. In Central Park, especially, you have to slalom around peds and joggers and strollers and carriages with horses...you get the idea. If your only time to ride is a weekend you might want to avoid the park loops.

More information about NYC bicycle projects can be found at:

I agree, Caaah, Clinton St is a good way to go. You might find that you don't need to get up much earlier, if at all, to make the HRG part of your commute. Once on it you can fly for blocks without stopping. Yes, there are lights and crossing traffic, but it's minimal. You can enter/exit the HRG at 46th St. and 51st St.

I hope to be back in the park this week. Had some work the past few weeks that interrupted my usual weekday rides(ahh life as a freelancer). I rarely, if ever ride in Prospect park on the weekend. Its just not worth it for me. hehe. too many kids darting around on the loops.

I'm in the park just before noon and will ride for an hour or so...

Anyone going to participate in some of the bike month rides? I might do the midnight ride this weekend.
