Bicycle Mechanics - Name of Red Colored Grease.....

Hey, just had a customer come by and ask me for some "red colored, syrup like consistency grease" that he favors. He has long forgotten the name of the vendor and din't even have a jar/ label for me to look at. I mentioned red colored grease for automobiles but he said that this was bike specific and not quite as thick as a Phil Wood or Park.

I know that DT makes a red hub grease...but I don't think this is what this cat has got in mind.

Any ideas o' brother wrenches?

At one point in the quest for the least possible viscous drag on my wheel hubs I was mixing oil with the regular water resistant boat trailer grease to produce a lighter more honey like mixture. I don't bother any more but there's no doubt that it produced less drag. It also migrates away or washes out easier and so I'll only do such a thing on a dry weather only bike that will see more frequent hub servicings than I'm willing to do these days.

But it sounds like he would rather have the actual brand named stuff than just whip up his own. In my case I got the idea for thinner lube when I saw on my old Campy and Shimano hubs that there was a clip to cover an oil hole. Apparently the old road racers used oil rather than grease just for the same reason that it has less viscous drag.

Eh, I fired that one over his bow as well and he said no...He's still in the store as we speak. Any other takers?

PM600 is also red, it's military spec. i used to know where to get it, but i've since forgetten.

Campy grease is red and Pennzoil makes a red bearing grease that works very well.

That's what I was going to suggest too, but I haven't seen any in 30 years.

Triflow has a red grease in an easy cheese style can.

I use Amsoil Synthetic grease for axle and bearing parts.

I got a 1/2 tube in a box o' parts I picked up a couple years ago. I didn't realize it was that old! Should be a good mate for my 25 year old tub of automotive wheel bearing grease!

It is a rather cool Candy Apple Reddish color!

I have an unused 14-oz cylinder of this stuff that I bought when I first heard all the good things about ProGold's chain lube and added a container of this grease to my first order. It is indeed red.

While I haven't used it (Phil Grease has been so reliable that I have no incentive to change) I have no doubts it's good stuff.

I think Velox used to make a pink/red grease.

Mobil1 synthetic grease is red. One pound can is around $8.

Weldtite makes a red teflon grease, http://www.weldtite.co.uk/detail.asp?ProductID=379&NavID=2. also comes in smaller tubes.
