Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I went to the Sports Orhto today because I have had a generalized aching in my right shoulder that has turned into quite a bit of weakness and unstability in several movements. The funny thing is that there was no weakness or aching when I was on the bike.
Well, it looks like the shoulder is okay, but he sent me to a Neuro to get a EMG, Needle Nerve Test. Too early to tell, but looks like there is some nerve problems in my brachal <sp> nerve set or something. They sent me for bloodwork and a cervical / shoulder MRI.
I had to head to California for the week, so I cant get the MRI till Saturday. That being said the neuro wants me off the bike till he and the ortho rule out any small tears that could get worse on the bike. I know that the neuro and ortho (who are both cyclists) have my best long term interest at heart, but it is just a bummer to be off the bike this time of year.
They did say I can continue SPinervals on the trainer to keep my fitness up, they just dont want a chance of hitting a pothole or going down and causing real damage on top of something small.
Oh, well...it will be hard to see my wife head out for the club ride without me on Saturday while I head off to my MRI. :( :(
Hopefully the steroids he gave me today are all I need and that they tests just show inflamation.

Only difference between you and me, my wife does not ride; so she got to hear me complain about how boring the trainer is each Saturday. I was off the bike for 3 months.. Gained a disgusting amount of weight and thoroughly bored.
Sorry and at least your off time might be shorter than mine. We will hope.Mine was torn. Good luck.Hope you will be ok and on the bike well before 3 months.

Or a new body.... :p
I guess I should say....off the roads....they said I can spend as much time in the trainer as I want...Ekkkkkkk!
Good news is I can lift my arm today - looks like the steroids are helping. I will still follow docs orders till the results of the MRI come back, dont want to turn a small problem into a big one.
Still frustrating.

I hope that I dont end up off for three months. That would put me in a really bad spot for next years riding season. My wife may pass me by! (She has only been riding for 2 months and is already doing metrics...14.5mph average, but still metrics!) I think I would go looney at 3 months.
From your post, I take it you are back on the bike now, How long did it take you to get back to par after?

argh, terrible news, man. i have had some difficulty myself in the last few years. 4 years ago i crashed and spiral fractured my right leg, which kept me off for 2 whole *years*. and now, 2 months ago, my girlfriend and i got hit by a car - i separated my shoulder and totalled my bike and have barely ridden since :\
new bike coming tho :D

PC sanity..The trainer did some minimal maintenance while down those three months. Still not right..Have to say my right arm is still only half way functional..(I can pick it up half way to my head) But, my cycling suffered.Gained about 20 pounds sitting around doing nothing. Also, my commute to work burns a lot of calories.
Did a hill ride with a strong cycling friend on Sunday. Those 20 pounds hurt.. Use to keep up with him..He had to wait at the top for like 10 minutes. A 3.5 mile climb of about 1000 feet. Will take awhile to get back to where I was.

Since I am 57, still about 30-40 lbs overweight and have hypertension - controlled with lots and lots of medicine - I asked my doctor about doing harm to myself when I really exert myself, like hill climbing when my heart really gets going. Sometimes, it feels like it is going to jump out of my chest.
He said, "Are you crazy? You're giving yourself a stress test every day! Your heart sounds like an athlete and you are losing weight and you look great! Stay on your bike and pedal!"
By the way, my doctor is a cyclist who commuits to work on his bike three times per week and still races at age 65!
