a few months back, i got me one of these new surly hubs, where there's threading for a lockring on both sides, blah blah blah, you prolly know the one i'm talking about.

anyway, the thing is acting all messed up these days; it's all tight & stuff, and i dont know why. the shop i bought it at is run by nice guys, but the remaining mechanics don't know very much at all about anything, especially stuff that isn't mtn bikes and bmx. so, i've taken the thing in to them a couple times, and they cant fix it. i've been riding around on my mtn bike, and i'm none too happy bout it.

so i guess i have to go at this alone. any ideas as to what's going on? i'm not mechanically inclined, so here's what's going down as best as i can explain:
1- the axel doesn't spin around freely within the hub
2- ok, i don't know the terms for these things, but between the hub itself and the track nuts, there's a washer and a little other nut-thing. on the one side, the washer and nut thing are acting as i'd expect. on the other side, they're stuck to the hub, and wont budge unless i threade the whole axel out of the hub.
(i'm realizing that i may not be making sense. perhaps i am beyond help?)
3- i'm thinking the whole deal might be messed up because, while changing a flat one drunken night, i overtightened the nuts that keep the rear wheel on. do y'all think i'm just proper f&*ked?

any help would be appreciated

definetly cones, loosen them up before you do damage inside.

Its hard to overtighten the rear nuts, you need to use a heavy foot on the spanner to do real damage.
May I suggest practicing your puncture repair when drunk.

thanks, everyone. i'll look into adjusting those cones tonight.

michaelw--i am already well versed in the inebriated tube exchange, but i need to work on the anger management issues that accompnay this practice. =)
