Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. When I lived in Westwood, bikes were all over the place and no bike lanes. I'm surprised more students aren't hit by cars over there with all of the traffic.

I saw that video as well. There are bike lanes like that all over L.A. The Westwood lane is on Par for L.A.

Bike lanes seem like an after thought throughout L.A. and in older communities. As a commuter, I have learned that if drivers aren't willing to nicely share a lane than you gotta take it away from them. Otherwise their carelessness is going to hurt you.

That's pretty bad. But in Vista near where I work, there is a main road that had a bike lane, but the road would get so congested on weekday afternoons people started using the bikelane and extra road space as a third lane. A few years ago the city repaved the road and repainted the lines. Now there are threee lanes for traffic and no bike lane, yet the bike lane signs are still up. Makes my commute home all kinds of fun. Not that the previous bike lane made any difference at all.

You're not going to find many sharp motivated people working for our government entities. I find examples of mindless decision-making everyday on our roadways. It's either sheer laziness on the part of those executing the work, inept bureaucracy, or lack of common sense. Regardless--it's our tax dollars which enables and perpetuates this silliness.

This is one of my favorites:
A fine example of the work done by our Department of public works. No one bothered to cut back the weeds, remove the roadkill, or sweep the road. Their assignment was to paint the stripe. Job well done:rolleyes:

That video is going around the Internet so fast ... I think it's already in 4 other forums, including NorCal.

I lived in Westwood for four years when I was going to school and never had any problems riding around there. I'm sure there are worse bike lanes somewhere in this country.

I'm never surprised by dumb stuff in westwood.

What surprises me is nobody's ripped on the guy's bike with the kickstand, the screw-top water bottle, etc. Fred-tastic!
