Can anyone tell me if a riding jacket exists that can be worn in cold climates like those here in Canada and then convert to a fall or spring type shell of a jacket for those not so cold days?
It would cerainly help to have something like this instead of purchasing a few different jackets at a pretty hefty price tag.

Thanks

I haven't found anything that fits that bill yet, so I sucked it up and bought the two or three different ones. One's a gore tex shell, one's a convertible jacket/vest, and one's a lightweight rain jacket. Took me a while to get them all, though. But, I'm definately glad I've got them now.

I think part of the reason is that most folks want to use layering to their advantage when they ride. That, and the manufacturers don't want to sell you just one jacket when they can sell you two or more.

I don't think there is a jacket made specifically for cycling, but check out Colorado Cyclist, they have some great heavy jackets.

Also, check out winter jackets made by Columbia (?) They have zip out heavy linings and are water resistant and breathable. They are rather expensive, upwards of $200US, but they are great jackets. I had one for quite a while, but when I lost so much weight, I could wrap it around myself six times, so I gave it to a still chubby friend.

I saw something today in the Road Runner Sports catalog. They cater mainly to runners, but this jacket might do the trick. It has a hood and sleeves that zip off. I don't have the catalog with me right now, but I'll bet you could find their website easily enough.

Cycling Plus mag recently reviewed winter outerwear. They really liked the Gore Phantom Plus jersey which has removable sleeves.

I did a little research and found and like the Gore Function Windstopper Jacket, which has 2 front pockets, removable sleeves, and everything stuffs into it's back pocket with straps to mount on your bike frame. I also like the fact that it has an adjustable waist and sleeves, too. Expensive, but beautifully made, and will last for years. The Windstopper material is an improvement on Gore-Tex fabric and is much more breathable, softer, and lighter weight. PerformanceBike.com has it on sale, although with only a tiny discount.
