Commuting - Commuting statistics

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

These are 2000 consensus statistics, but interesting indeed:

Wow Seattle is in the top 10 for every catagory but most carfree cool! Need to see the bus rider percentage go up though.
Looks like my city has 0.13% commute by bike, out of a population of 65,000. That means we should have some 70 bike commuters....

Yeah, I was disappointed to see that neither Portland nor Seattle were high on the bus rider percentage. Sort of makes sense, though, that most of the cities with high public transportation statistics are in New York/New Jersey, where riding a bus or train is more practical than driving.

Wow! Richmond is #68 with 1.12% bike commuters, though if the city were in the next group up it'd be in the top fifteen. Since we're used to being last in everything but murder rate and statues of confederate generals, this is great news. Having ridden in Richmond for twenty years, though, this leaves me with one burning question:
Where the heck are all these people?
And we're an impressive #34 in carless households, though I bet this has more to do with the poverty in the city than anything else.

All of the top ten large cities (% of bike commuters) are west of the Mississippi. This doesn't surprise me, although Minneapolis' high ranking is amazing, given the winters there.

Winston Salem 0.1% commute by bike. No wonder I don't see anybody on my way to work.

Hey Poguemahone (love the name), how is your commuting experience in Richmond? Frankly, the thought of going up the Cary Street hill (just across the Huguenot Bridge) in rush hour intimidates me. It seems that the cars are practically brushing the legs of the bikers I see pedalling up there.
Ohhh, so surprised my hometown isn't on the list... NOT!!!

Wow! Number 1 (Tucson)...That surprises me, but I did see a few other commuter's in the dark this morning! I imagine the number dips during the summer.

Percentage of bicycle commuters for my town .16%
All this time I thought I was a 1 percent'er. It turns out we would need a sixfold increase in numbers of bike commuters just to get near 1%.
I notice that the changes in the numbers since 1990 are not encouraging either.
If things tend to get worse before getting better then we are certainly on our way.

Percentage of bicycle commuters in my very-large workplace--
--me.
I guess that's 1 divided by several hundred. Anyway, 1.
:p
But I can say that many of my friends at work have taken an active interest either in cycling or physical fitness partly because they saw what it did for me.
I guess it's that old "fear of motor traffic" plague that's responsible for keeping everyone off the bike. By the way people drive on these freeways, I'm not suprised.

I don't commute across the James, because by law you have to dismount and walk across almost every bridge over the James, including the Huguenot Woods bridge. I've ridden that hill, though, and if you hit it at rush hour, you're moving faster than the cars even if you're going up it. My commute is from Northside to the Fan, so it's not bad.
Indeed, very interesting. Unfortunately, the stats for cycling if you live in a 'large city' are pretty pathetic all around...only two cities break 2%, and only an additional three break 1.5%. Something is wrong with this picture, folks! My advice: get off this list and get on the back of your local gov't, or get out in the streets and start agitating!
PS--thanks to Gonesh for posting this info!
