Il Pompino sizing?

Any Il Pompino owners care to comment on their sizing? I'm not that familiar with compact geo frames, but I like traditional road bikes with about 56 seat tubes, and comparatively short top tubes. I have a 50cm gunnar cross bike with a 54.5 tt but it is too small in the seat tube. I'm thinking the 51cm Il pompino would also be too small.

What size do I need?

Our frames are COMPACT geometry, meaning you need to knock 3cm off “conventional” frame sizes.. So for a Pompino, here’s our size guide.

57cm - XL - from 6′ to 6′4”
54cm - L - from 5′9” to 6′1”
51cm - M from 5′5” to 5′10”
48cm - from 5′1” to 5′6”Of course with them being compact, if you want a longer frame, you can go up a frame size without ruining yourself on the top tube.

I saw that, which tells me I should have a 51 (5'7"), but since the bike I have that is very similar to those dimensions is too small I can't help but think I should be on a 54. I'm curious about people's actual experiences with the frames and their fit.

I suppose it's ridiculous to expect a perfect fit from a mail order frame.

It sounds like you need a longer TT. How does your current 54.5cm TT compare to the Il Pompino in 51cm?

Also, what are you looking to do with the Il Pompino? Race? Commute? Putter about?

What do you mean by too small in the seat tube? You feel you have too much seatpost showing? What length cranks do you use?

I have a 51 pompino. 2007 model. It sounds like we're about the same size, too. The pompino is semi-compact. For me, the standover and seat tube height are just right. I find the top tube to be a plenty long. In fact I went to a 90mm stem with a straight seatpost.

One thing to consider is that in a cross bike used for cross riding and even singletrack you do not want to be really stretched out in the top tube. You need to be able to quickly and comfortably ride on the hoods.

Having a slightly shorter and higher reach to the handlebars will keep you in the saddle longer and be more comfortable on an ss crosser. (Especially downhills.) These are the reasons why shallow drop bars are also popular with cross racers.

It sounds like going bigger than the size 51 pompino's the TT may be too long for you. Are you all legs? What's your inseam?

Yep, I'm all legs, 32.5 inseam. I like the TT length on my current bike, which has roughly the same TT, but I have about 8 inches of post showing (to the rails) with 172.5 cranks. The gunnar is a nice fit for racing cross, but for commuting and longer rides the bars are a little low, even with an inch of spacers. The On-One will be more for commuting and playing around on, which is why I was thinking I should go up a size, but I am worried the top tube would get too long.

I have a Large IL Pomp (the older silver model with 135mm dropouts).
5' 10" 33" inseam.
I prefer a shorter TT, and a more upright position due to a neck injury.
I run a 110mm Thomsom 5 deg, and a flat bar (1.0 inch spacers).
Almost perfect, juat a shade long with the stem; likely would use a 100mm to be spot on.
For a comparison The 56cm Rob RoyGB I just ordered is almost a full inch (3/4 inch)shorter in the TT.
